2023 Puerto Rico Open Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

Considering the bigger stakes in this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, where most of the top golfers opted to join, there’s a rather weak field to be found in the 2023 Puerto Rico Open happening at the same time as the action in Bay Hill. That being said, who are the relatively unknown golfers to be on the lookout for this week in the Caribbean’s charming Grand Reserve Golf Club?

Nitrobetting is here to help turn your golf bets from bogeys to birdies. This time, let’s take a closer look at the three best sleeper candidates to keep tabs on at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open, as well as their corresponding golf odds to win the latest installment of the annual tournament held in Rio Grande.

Cameron Percy

  • 2023 Puerto Rico Open Odds: +2,800

A solid T12 finish in this past week’s Honda Classic gives 48-year-old Cameron Percy great momentum heading into the Puerto Rico Open. The Aussie veteran will relish a return to the Caribbean at that, as he’s had back-to-back T7 finishes in Rio Grande in his last two starts and has gone 8-for-9 with four top-25 finishes lifetime. That being said, Percy is an appealing sleeper candidate to win his first-ever PGA TOUR event.

Erik van Rooyen

  • 2023 Puerto Rico Open Odds: +2,800

It’s quite alarming to see Erik van Rooyen have merely sleeper-worthy odds to win this week considering he’s the top-ranked golfer from the entire field. Then again, the South African only has a T6 finish from January’s American Express tourney as his lone standout performance in seven starts this season. On the other hand, van Rooyen won his first-ever PGA TOUR event just last August at the Barracuda Championship, and it’s this recent winning experience that gives him the obvious dark horse status to come on out top in his Puerto Rico Open debut.

Brice Garnett

  • 2023 Puerto Rico Open Odds: +3,300

39-year-old Brice Garnett sure loves his time out in the Caribbean and is another intriguing sleeper pick to win this week. The Missouri native’s lone win on the PGA TOUR came in 2018 in the Dominican Republic, and he’s been consistently competitive in Rio Grande as well. Garnett is a perfect 6-for-6 at the Puerto Rico Open, including a tie for seventh place in last year’s edition of the tournament alongside the aforementioned Percy, as well as an even better T5 showing in 2020.
