2023 South Point 400 Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

Sunday’s South Point 400 hosts the Round of 8 for the NASCAR Cup Series. With the unforeseen results Talladega and the Charlotte Roval produced, Championship contenders are under pressure to perform well in this race to secure a good position heading into the Championship 4.

Of course, this opens up more opportunities for the grid’s top sleeper picks. We get to see drivers battle around the 1.5-mile tri-oval in Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, featuring an asphalt surface with 20 degrees of banking in each turn and 9 degrees on the front and backstretch.

Ty Gibbs

  • 2023 South Point 400 Race Odds: +2,900

Ty Gibbs has been driving the wheels off the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in the 2023 Cup Series. He brings his pace from last season where he won seven races, claiming the Xfinity Series championship in his first full-time season. With athletic roots as the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Joe Gibbs, Ty made his name relevant in the sport during the 2020 ARCA Menards Series season where he earned six wins in 16 starts. Gibbs followed it up with a championship-winning run in 2021 while racing a partial schedule in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

The youngster from North Carolina ranks 18th in the 2023 season. He scored 690 points in 32 races, which featured nine top-ten finishes and four top-five appearances. Despite recording five DNFs so far this season, Gibbs does have a decent average start of 14.688 and an average finish of 18.188.

Joey Logano

  • 2023 South Point 400 Race Odds: +2,900

With winning seasons in his portfolio (2018 and 2022) driving with Team Penske Ford, the two-time title winner will try to force his way from the sleepers side this weekend. The two-time title holder started his 2023 title defense well, winning at a rather familiar Atlanta Motor Speedway. However, Logano grinded for wins since. He ranks 13th this season with a win, 15 top-tens, and 10 top-five appearances.

If the 33-year-old can return to his 2022 self where he earned a victory in the inaugural Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum followed by four more wins, we could see him part the grid and score his second victory of the season. With fair stats of an 11 average start and a 15.469 average finish, the experienced driver can return to winning ways heading into the Championship 4.

Daniel Suarez

  • 2023 South Point 400 Race Odds: +7,900

The Mexican driver is in his seventh season in the top-flight division of NASCAR and his third behind the wheel of Trackhouse Racing’s car. Expectations are high for the 31-year-old since becoming the first Mexican-born driver to win a Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway on June 2 022. He also won the Xfinity Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year award in 2015 and earned a series championship victory in 2016.

Suarez now ranks 19th in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season. Some say it’s tricky to recover from such a position, but we know he has the talent and grit once he fires on all cylinders. He documented ten top-ten appearances and three top-fives in 32 races this year, which boasts a 15.719 average start and an average finish of 19th.
