2022 NHL Stanley Cup Recap

The Colorado Avalanche entered lats season one of the favorites. The Avs didn’t disappoint. Not only did Colorado win the Cup, but they did so in a close to miraculous 20 games.

Colorado dominated during the regular season and in the playoffs. The Avs swept Nashville 4-0 in the first round. In the second, Colorado blasted St. Louis 4-2. A 4-0 sweep of Edmonton in the left no doubt that 2022 was the Avs year.

Two time defending champion Tampa Bay was supposed to pose a threat. But the Avalanche beat the Lightning 4-2.

2023 NHL Stanley Cup Early Season Picks

Colorado Avalanche

It used to be difficult to win back-to-back, but the Penguins accomplished the repeat in 2016 and 2017. Then in 2021, Tampa won their second Stanley Cup. This season, no team is as solid in every phase of the game as the defending champion Colorado Avalanche. Nathan MacKinnon is one of the top three players in the league.

Linemate Miko Rantanen can take over if Nathan is having a bad day. Captain Gabriel Landeskog can also take over a match. The defense is ridiculous because Devon Towes and Cale Makar headline the back. The odds seem low. But they’re not. If you like the Avs, go for it.

Toronto Maple Leafs

60-goal scorer Auston Matthews is also the reigning Hart Trophy winner. Matthews mustn’t do everything on his own because Mitch Marner is there to lend a stick. The Leafs are also strong in goal. Matt Murray, who won the Cup with the Pens, and Ilya Samsonov make for the top pair of goalies in the league.

The key for the Maple Leafs is to get out of the first round. If Toronto can escape Round 1 during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they will have a shot to win it all.

Tampa Bay Lightning

No team has made it to four straight Stanley Cup Finals since the Tampa Bay Lightning accomplished the feat from 1980 to 1984. The Lightning has a real shot to do it this season.

Tampa isn’t as deep as they were in 2020 and 2021. But the Lightning still boast the core of Victor Hedman, Steve Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. Also, Tampa added Ian Cole, Haydn Fleury, and Philippe Meyers. So we should take Tampa seriously as a contender.

New York Rangers

It’s tough to understand why the Rangers offer such high odds to win the Stanley Cup. NYR fell in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Tampa Bay Lightning, which automatically makes them a contender.

Not only that, but the Rangers won 110 games last season. Vezina Trophy winning goalie Igor Shesterkin return to man the net. 50-goal scorer Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin, and Adam Fox, who won the Norris Trophy in 2021, remain part of the team. At the odds, the Rangers are an overlay.
