Alabama Crimson Tide 2023 Straight-Up Overview
The 2023 Alabama Crimson Tide is much different than the 2022 version. The 2023 Tide will be without three key elements to their 2022 team. Bryce Young no longer plays quarterback for Alabama. Linebacker Will Anderson is also a pro and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien took the same job with the New England Patriots.
So the Crimson Tide have many questions to answer. Jalen Milroe, listed first on the depth chart, doesn’t have the quarterback experience or knowledge that Young possesses. Milroe is a big step down from Bryce, one of the best college quarterbacks in a decade.
Milroe made a lot of mistakes last season. The fact Saban hasn’t declared Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner or highly-touted freshman Tyler Simpson the starter means Milroe is Alabama’s best option, which isn’t a good thing.
New offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will try and get Milroe up to speed quickly. But Rees will be limited by Milroe’s experience, which means the 2023 Alabama football team is likely to lean on what should be an excellent rushing attack.
Expect Saban to go to a bulldoze strategy where Milroe uses his legs almost as much as he uses his arm. The offensive line should be one of the best in the nation while running backs Jace McClellan and Roydell Williams will find roster spots on NFL teams in the future.
On the defensive side, things are much rosier for the Tide. The defense will boast one of the top lines in the nation. The secondary is stellar and the linebackers, led by Dallas Turner, are great.
So at the end, Bama’s success will depend on how well Milroe throws the ball. Bama should get away with beating most of the teams on their schedule with their rushing attack.
But Alabama will struggle versus Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and LSU unless they can throw the football. Let’s say the Crimson Tide lose to Texas in one of the season’s early upsets, Tennessee, and the rival LSU Tigers.
Bama finishes a respectable 9-3 but with a worse regular season record than they’ve had in a long time.

The Crimson Tide had a decent 2022 against the spread. But all the changes on offense will lead to losses ATS.
The Texas and LSU games happen in Tuscaloosa. So if we're right about Alabama losing those games, the Tide will also lose to the Longhorns and Fighting Tigers against the spread.
Once Bama falls to Texas, though, oddsmakers will adjust spread lines. The Crimson Tide go 7-5 ATS.
