Why bet on the Houston Astros?

Make that three wins in a row now for the Houston Astros, who had just swept NL East leaders the New York Mets in their two-game set in H-Town that concluded with a 5-3 victory for the home team. The Astros have a commanding 10-games lead in the AL West standings, but are still seven games behind none other than the Yankees for the best record in the American League.

Hard-hitting outfielder Yordan Alvarez blasted a pair of solo home runs for Houston, which is now tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the third-most homers in the majors with 90. Alvarez now has 21 home runs to also kept pace with New York’s Aaron Judge (25) for the most dingers this season.

As well as the Astros have been hitting of late, it’s really been their pitching that’s been really astounding. They are third in the MLB in team earned-run average, with Thursday’s starter Framber Valdez (7-3, 2.78 ERA) being a key man on the rotation. Valdez’s last start leaves something to be desired, though, as the Dominican lefty gave up eight hits and three runs in six innings against the White Sox; albeit with seven strikeouts to bring his season K total to 68.

Why bet on the New York Yankees?

Thanks to a thrilling 5-4 road victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, the New York Yankees avoided losing their three-game series against their division rivals. The Yankees have not lost back-to-back games this entire month, which means they’ve managed to come out on top of all their serieses played in June and hang on to their MLB-best record now at 51-18.

New York fell into a three-run hole to the Rays in the second inning of Wednesday’s game. However, unheralded catcher Jose Trevino delivered a couple of heroic moments for his team. Trevino drove home a run in the sixth on a fielding error, then hit a go-ahead two-run blast in the eighth to take the lead for the first time in the contest and never look back.

The Yanks are prepared to counter Houston’s arms with their own brand of fantastic pitching; one that’s tops in the majors in team ERA (2.88), wins, (50), and second-overall in saves (24). Jameson Taillon (8-1, 2.70 ERA) will take the mound Thursday coming off an eight-strikeout outing of no-run ball in 5.2 innings of work against the Blue Jays. Clay Holmes (4-0, 0.55 ERA), New York’s closer who picked up his 12th save of the season yesterday, will likely be an integral part of the series against the Astros as well.

Astros vs. Yankees MLB Betting Trends

  • The Astros are 8-2 in their last 10 road games.
  • The Astros went 2-4 against New York last season.
  • The totals have gone over in three of Houston’s last six games in general, with two of them resulting in a push.
  • The Yankees have a 14-game home winning streak going for them right now.
  • The Yanks are 9-1 in their last 10 games against teams from the AL West.
  • The totals have gone under in four of the last six games played in Yankee Stadium.

Astros vs. Yankees Betting Prediction

There’s no denying that the Yankees still have the edge in this matchup with how well they’re playing on both sides of the ball all season long. Then again, the Astros are no pushovers as division leaders themselves, and their rather stellar road record of late only reinforces that an upset could be in store during Thursday’s series opener.
