Why bet on the Baltimore Orioles?

With a little help from a lengthy rain delay and a commanding 7-0 sixth-inning lead, MLB officials decided to call Wednesday contest between the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals a wrap and handing the contest to the Orioles outright. That win made up for Tuesday’s 3-0 shutout loss to the neighboring Nats, as Baltimore is now just eight games below .500 with plenty of time left in the season to make a strong run.

The hero for the Orioles Wednesday was rising leadoff outfielder Austin Hays, who completed the cycle by going a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate in just six innings (again, due to the weather delay). Hays accounted for three of his team’s seven runs scored that day, as he also became just the fourth player this season to hit for the cycle.

The O’s got a huge start out of Tyler Wells that game, and now Dean Kremer (1-1, 2.35 ERA) will look to keep them rolling as Thursday’s starter in Chicago. The Isreali righty has had back-to-back quality starts of late, with just one run and nine hits allowed across 11 innings of action in matchups against the Rays and Royals. Kremer’s only started three games this season thus far and will be relatively fresh entering the series opener against the White Sox.

Why bet on the Chicago White Sox?

After back-to-back one-run victories over the Toronto Blue Jays, the Chicago White Sox failed to close out their three-game set Wednesday in with the Blue Jay’s 9-5 win giving the White Sox a taste of their own medicine. Chicago racked up eight and seven runs in their two earlier meetings, respectively, but Wednesday’s loss bumps them back down to four games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the AL Central lead.

After a 4-for-4 outing in the series opener against Toronto, Andrew Vaughn stayed hot and went 3-for-5 with a run scored Wednesday. The Sox are a top-five hitting ballclub in the majors thanks to their .254 team batting average, but they rank in the bottom-third of the MLB with just 287 runs scored in the season thus far (21st).

Chicago’s pitching, which is fourth in the majors with 629 total strikeouts to date, has struggled in general with their flamethrowers relatively lacking in command by also rankings 21st this season with a 4.17 team ERA. Johnny Cueto (1-3, 2.95 ERA) will look to remedy his team’s woes Thursday. After three straight starts having allowed three earned runs and no more than six innings of work apiece, Cueto turned in a gem of an outing against the NL West-leading Astros last week, throwing seven full innings of no-hit baseball with just two hits allowed to go with five strikeouts.

Orioles vs. White Sox MLB Betting Trends

  • The Orioles are 4-2 in the last six road games.
  • The O’s went winless against Chicago in seven meetings last season.
  • The totals went over in each of Baltimore’s last six games on the road.
  • The White Sox are 3-5 in the last eight home games.
  • The Sox are 4-1 in their last five games played against AL East teams.
  • The totals went over in all seven of the most recent games played in Guarantee Rate Field.

Orioles vs. White Sox Betting Prediction

One would be quick to assume that the White Sox are heavy favorites in Thursday’s contest, especially with home-field advantage and recent record against Baltimore working in their favor. However, the Orioles have looked far from the worst team in the majors of late for a change (five AL teams have worst records than them right now), and the defaulted rain-delay win Wednesday might actually be a good omen of better things to come for the O’s, beginning with a winnable matchup against the underachieving Sox.
