Baker Mayfield 2022 Carolina Panthers Predictions
After weeks of frustration towards the Cleveland Browns organization, Baker Mayfield was finally granted his request for a trade following the arrival of Deshaun Watson in Cleveland. It was the Carolina Panthers who traded for the disgruntled quarterback earlier this week (and at a very low price at that), and now the Panthers are trending because of the steal of a deal that they got for Mayfield’s services.

Progressive Change Under Center
For the past two seasons, the Panthers have tinkered around with starting quarterback prospects such as Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold to mediocre results. Now, Carolina has yet another QB project in the works in Baker Mayfield, who had four good-but-not-great seasons in Cleveland and with just one postseason apperance in those four years.
All it took for the Panthers to acquire the former Heisman Trophy winner from the Browns was a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as $5 million of the $15 million that Mayfield was due this season. The Browns still had to pay for the larger chunk of that existing contract.
All things considered, Carolina lost very little in making a deal for Mayfield happen. What’s peculiar about this move, however, is that the team now has the top two picks from the 2018 NFL Draft on their roster, as well as spending a third-round pick rookie quarterback Matt Corral just earlier this year. It goes without saying that there will be an intense battle for the starting QB job this preseason between Mayfield, Darnold, and Corral.
CMC Still the Main Show in Charlotte
There’s plenty of skepticism from the media surrounding the Panthers’ trade for Mayfield considering that they should have given Darnold more time to develop with a full, healthy season on the horizon. Then again perhaps bringing in Mayfield, the only other guy drafted ahead of Darnold in 2018, will bring the best out of the two gunslingers in the long run.
Regardless of who’s under center for Carolina by Week 1, though, the team’s success still hinges largely on the wide yet bruised shoulders of star running back Christian McCaffrey. Since his record -shattering 2019 campaign, the former First-Team All-Pro selection has played just 10 games over the next two seasons since.
As such, the Panthers would need a healthy McCaffrey and a reinvigorated Mayfield (and/or Darnold) for their revamped offense to get back to relevancy. Thankfully, Mayfield has had decent experience with Cleveland’s own run-heavy offense these past few years, namely his best, playoff-bound campaign in 2020 wherein he had a strong two-headed backfield in Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt making up for Mayfield’s deficiencies in the passing game.
Updated Panthers Super Bowl 57 Odds
As of this writing, the Panthers are +8,000 longshots to win Super Bowl LVII. They also currently have the third-best odds at +1,200 to win the AFC South division title this season. As an added point of reference on where Carolina stands in the division race, the Atlanta Falcons have the worst odds to win the division title amongst the four AFC South teams at +2,000.
