Bears vs. Commanders 2023 NFL Week 5 Odds, Preview & Pick
Football fans are in for a bittersweet treat this Thursday night as the Chicago Bears take on the Washington Commanders in a game that does not deserve a primetime slot. The Commanders nearly stunned the reigning NFC champs in Week 4 but have still looked mediocre at best, while the Bears are still struggling mightily and are still winless after the first month of play.
Nitrobetting is ready to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Week 5 clash between the Chicago Bears and the Washington Commanders.

Why Bet on the Chicago Bears?
As if the Chicago Bears couldn’t sink any lower, they outdid themselves and still ended up losing to the Denver Broncos in Week 4, 31-28, in a game that they had every right to win. The Bears led by 21 points with under five minutes left in the third quarter only to see that lead evaporate against an equally inept Broncos team with a furious rally down the stretch.
On the bright side, Justin Fields looked much better under center for the first time this season before his team squandered their best opportunity at a win. Fields went 28-of-35 for 335 passing yards and four touchdowns; albeit with his lone interception being a costly one last in the contest. Even running back Khalil Herbert got in on the fun, gaining 103 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Unfortunately, Chicago’s defense has been a total sieve, ranking fifth-worst in the NFL with an average of 383.3 yards allowed per game. The Bears also have the second-worst scoring defense (34.3 PAPG) only ahead of Denver, which only got its average rocked by Week 3’s infamous 70-point beatdown at the hands of the Dolphins.
Why Bet on the Washington Commanders?
In a crucial Week 4 divisional showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Commanders showed up in Philly determined to pull off an upset. Sadly, Washington came up short at that upset but did look extremely competitive in a 31-34 overtime loss to the Eagles.
Sam Howell took another huge step toward becoming a bona fide franchise QB, throwing for 290 passing yards and a passing TD while also gaining 40 rushing yards on six carries. Nine Commanders receivers gained positive yardage with Howell’s most efficient game of the season and didn’t turn the ball over either against a stout Eagles defense.
Speaking of defense, Washington’s D still has room to improve, to say the least, as it has given up an average of 34.7 points per game over the last three weeks. The brutal stretch of having to face Buffalo and Philadelphia these past two weeks is over, so this Week 5 matchup should see a nice bounce-back effort from the Commies’ defense.
Bears vs. Commanders Betting Trends
- Chicago is winless in the last six road games (SU/ATS).
- The Bears have also lost four straight against teams from the NFC East (1-3 ATS).
- The totals went over in seven of Chicago’s last eight games on the road.
- Washington is 4-4 in the last eight home games (3-4-1 ATS).
- The Commanders are 2-5 in its last seven contests versus the NFC North (4-3-1 ATS).
- The totals went under in each of the last seven games played in FedEx Field.
Bears vs. Commanders Expert Betting Predictions
As encouraging as Chicago’s offense was last week, this should still be a TNF affair for the Commanders to lose. But with not a lot of confidence instilled into Washington just yet, there’s still hope that the Bears can cover the relatively favorable spread against them as road dogs. We’ll take the Commanders in moneyline wagers and the Bears against the spread.
