Buffalo Bills 2023 Season Win/Loss Total

By Hank Blaine

The Buffalo Bills memorably made the Super Bowl four straight seasons in the early 1990s and lost all four. They haven’t been back since. Is this the year Josh Allen & Co. finally bring a championship to western New York? Maybe. Let’s break down the 2023 Bills.

A Closer Look at the Buffalo Bills 2023 NFL Season

Can they make it to the Super Bowl this season?

I’m not saying the Bills can’t win Super Bowl 58 next February in Las Vegas, but one could argue they are getting further from winning a championship instead of closer. Following the 2020 season, the Bills reached the AFC title game but were blasted by the Chiefs but it was still a big step forward for Buffalo.

It then had an AFC Divisional Round game seemingly won in Kansas City following the 2021 regular season but allowed Patrick Mahomes to get the Chiefs into field goal range with just a few seconds left in regulation and Harrison Butker drilled a 49-yarder as time expired to force the extra session. The Chiefs then won in OT.

Last year, the Bills again fell short in the Divisional Round, this time 27-10 at home to Cincinnati. There was no doubt which was the better team that day as Cincinnati never trailed in the snow. Buffalo’s pass rush generated very little pressure against a Bengals offensive line missing three starters due to injuries. The Bills had been 4-0 under Sean McDermott all-time in home playoff games.

Changes within the Roster

Buffalo wasn’t super active in free agency. It lost No. 1 running back Devin Singletary, who wasn’t a true No. 1 anyways, but replaced him with former Patriot Damien Harris on a one-year deal. Last season, he played in 11 games and had 106 attempts for 462 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per attempt. Harris’ best season came in 2021 when he started in 15 games and racked up 202 carries for 929 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per carry.

The Bills have a young running back in second-year James Cook, who should take more of a role this year … that is unless older brother Dalvin signs with the team. The four-time Pro Bowler with the Vikings was recently released and is expected to either sign with Buffalo or his hometown Miami Dolphins.

On defense, the team’s big moves were re-signing tackle Ed Oliver and safety Jordan Poyer and adding lineman Leonard Floyd — plus, Hall of Fame pass-rusher Von Miller will be ready to go off his torn ACL suffered last Thanksgiving in Detroit. Had Miller not gotten hurt, the Bills might have reached the Super Bowl.

Poyer dealt with a variety of injuries during the 2022 season, beginning with an elbow injury in training camp, but played in 12 regular-season games and both playoff games. The Bills went 12-0 in the regular season with Poyer active. His season finished with his first career Pro Bowl appearance. Oliver’s run stop win rate (41.5%) was 10th best in the league last season. Floyd had nine sacks last season with the Rams which would have led the Bills.

Will Josh Allen Overcome Last Season?

In the draft, the Bills got QB Josh Allen – who is on the cover of the ultra-popular Madden 24 video game this year – some help with tight end Dalton Kincaid, the No. 25 overall pick out of Utah. He is the first Bills offensive player drafted in the first round since Allen in 2018. General manager Brandon Beane emphasized Kincaid’s “elite hands” and that he should be viewed as more of a receiving weapon. Bills tight ends combined for just 57 receptions in 2022 (ranked 29th).

Allen completed 63.3% of his passes last season for 4,283 yards, 35 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also had 124 carries for 762 yards and seven touchdowns for the Bills. He’s a stud. Now, he’s the first Bills player to say he’s also on the main cover of Madden as well.

What to expect for the 2023-24 NFL Season?

Buffalo has the seventh-toughest schedule this year as its opponents combined for a .542 winning percentage last year. The Bills are 1.5-point favorites for Week 1 at the New York Jets and their new quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The teams split two low-scoring games last year, each winning at home.

It will be the third NFL meeting between Allen and Rodgers. They split the first two. Allen shut out in his rookie season in Green Bay (22-0) but beat Rodgers in his last season with the Packers 27-17 last October. The Bills are set to play in a franchise record six primetime games this season, surpassing the previous team-high set in 2022 of five such games. Buffalo was 5-0 in primetime games last season. Buffalo’s Week 13 bye matches the latest bye week the Bills have ever had. The team won’t travel out of the Eastern time zone until December.
