Why Bet on Danielle Collins?

As the runner-up of last season’s Australian Open, expectations are relatively high for Danielle Collins. The No. 13 seed of this year’s tournament has certainly been put to the test as she needed all three sets before winning her first two matches in Melbourne this time around.

Collins had to fight tooth and nail to eliminate veteran Karolina Muchova, as the two put on a show in the third set of a second-round showdown that saw six tiebreakers before deciding that final set in favor of the 29-year-old Florida native. Now comes a stiffer challenge for Collins in Rybanika, who is much younger and more decorated than herself.

On the bright side, Collins is at her best in Melbourne, where she reached the finals last season falling only to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. Collins also reached the semis of the Aussie Open back in 2019, but did fail to escape the second round in the two seasons sandwiched between her two stellar performances Down Under.

Ever since stunningly winning the Wimbledon ladies’ singles title last July, Elena Rybanika has sort of coasted her way through the rest of the 2022 WTA Tour season with middling results. Winning her first two matches in Melbourne (both in straight sets) is an auspicious sign that the 23rd-seeded 23-year-old is turning things around for the better, though.

Rybanika lost just three games in her second-round matchup against Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan, giving her more time to rest for her upcoming match in the third round. The young Kazakhstani standout is now set for another rematch against Collins, whom she defeated not too long ago in Adelaide a little over a week ago.

Collins and Rybanika have faced each other in singles competition on two occasions with each competitor winning a match over the other. The rubber match is set this Thursday and it’s been the latter who looked more prepared to make a deep run in this year’s Aussie Open than the former given the recent results of the two WTA Tour upstarts.

We wouldn’t be surprised in Rybanika takes this third-round clash in straight sets, but we see this match going the full distance before Collins peters out to a loss down the stretch.
