Why Bet on the New Jersey Devils?

Just when the New Jersey Devils got their first win of the series in an emphatic fashion in Game 3, they went right back to the receiving end of a 6-1 rout against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 4 Tuesday.

The Devils have scored just a single goal in each of their three losses in the series and will need to find a way to pick up the scoring pace similar to their eight-goal explosion in Game 3. Although it’s nice to see star center Jack Hughes score his third goal in two games, the rest of Jersey’s offense was nowhere to be found yet again.

To make matters worse, Vitek Vanecek was once again a liability between the pipes as he surrendered five goals in just 17 shots from Carolina. Vanecek was pulled out of the contest in favor of Akira Schmid, who fared much better in relief with 11 saves in 12 Hurricanes shots on goal the rest of the way. Schmid should get the starting nod in Game 5 as the Devils try to claw their way out of the massive series hole they found themselves in due to poor defense.

Why Bet on the Carolina Hurricanes?

There’s a storm brewing in Raleigh this Thursday as the Carolina Hurricanes attempt to close out the series on their home ice. Carolina has outscored New Jersey by a whopping 17-3 margin in each of the former team’s wins as the Canes are getting offensive production from just about every corner.

The Devils erupted for five goals in the second period of Game 4 to blow the game wide open, which also happens to be the most goals that the Devils have allowed in a single period all season. Martin Necas scored the first two goals for Carolina before the likes of Brent Burns, Jordan Martinook, Brett Pesce and Jesper Fast also found the back of the net. Martinook, for his part, has nine points through four games in the series.

Goalie Frederik Andersen also had a decent showing on Tuesday, stopping 21 shots from Jersey after having a meltdown of sorts in Game 3. The Devils never got a ton of good looks against Carolina’s strong play from the blue line and this has led to Andersen playing more confidently, especially with his team’s offense giving a ton of cushion for him to work with.

Devils vs. Hurricanes Betting Trends

  • The Devils have lost three straight road games and five of their last eight away from Jersey.
  • The Devils are now just 3-8 in the last 11 meetings against Carolina.
  • The totals went over in each of New Jersey’s last three games on the road.
  • The Hurricanes are 7-1 in the last eight home games.
  • The Canes are 4-1 in its last five outings as favorites to win.
  • The totals went over in three of Carolina’s last four games played in PNC Arena.

Devils vs. Hurricanes Game 5 Expert Betting Predictions

All the recent trends highlighted above indicate that the Hurricanes are in a prime position to close out the series sooner than later. We’ll have to agree with that and predict that the Canes advance to the Eastern Conference Finals with another high-scoring victory in Game 5, but not before the Devils put up more than a single goal and lose by no more than a two-goal margin for a change.
