Why Bet on the Miami Dolphins?

The real Tua Tagovailoa show will start this 2021 NFL season. The Dolphins are giving the former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback the starting job right out of the gate, with no signal-player in front of him on the depth chart. In his rookie season, Tagovailoa had to play behind Ryan Fitzpatrick for a good portion of the campaign, but he still looked decent in the games where he started. Tagovailoa even was under center when the Dolphins defeated the Patriots, 22-12, back in Week 15 of the 2020 NFL season at home.

While he was not able to throw a touchdown pass and was intercepted once, Tagovailoa managed to complete 20 of 26 passes for 145 passing yards against the Pats in that game. This time, Tagovailoa will be aided by a better group of targets downfield, with the Dolphins adding Jaylen Waddle to the mix. Look out for Miami’s pass rush to put Mac Jones and the Patriots’ offensive line to a test. Last season, Miami had 41 sacks, while the Pats’ offense was 26th in the league with a 7.76 QB sacked percentage.

Why Bet on the New England Patriots?

The Patriots are riding on the arm of rookie quarterback Mac Jones after he edged out Cam Newton for the starting role in Foxboro. Although Jones looked good in the preseason, there should be at least a few questions for this Patriots’ offense to answer. However, it’s not a reach to think that Bill Belichick has already got those covered, and he’ll just let the performance of his team speak for itself.

There’s better depth in the Pats’ receiving corps this time around after the team added Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne to the wide receiver group. If healthy, newcomers Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith should be fantastic red-zone targets for Jones. Both tight ends are also expected to be out there on the field in Week 1. New England also has an opportunistic defense that had a steady diet of interceptions last season. Tagovailoa is yet to convey as a proven commodity for Miami’s passing attack, so the Pats might just expose him again on Sunday.

Dolphins vs. Patriots Betting Trends

  • The Dolphins are 4-1 ATS in their past five games as an underdog away from home.
  • The Dolphins are 20-28 ATS in their last 28 games.
  • The Over is 3-1 in the Dolphins’ last four games.
  • The Patriots are 4-1 ATS in their last five opening-week games.
  • The Patriots are 8-1 in their last nine games against Miami.
  • The Under is 7-1 in the Patriots’ past eight contests.

Dolphins vs. Patriots Expert Betting Predictions

The Dolphins and the Patriots each feature a young quarterback, so perhaps expect a rather slow-paced and low-scoring game, with both teams going run-heavy. But don’t be surprised to see home-run plays in this game, especially from Miami, as Tagovailoa is also known for his arm strength. He and DeVante Parker could hook up for a huge play. Then again, the Patriots’ secondary will be tricky to deal with for the Fins’ attack.
