Heat vs. Hawks 2023 NBA Odds and Preview – January 16th

By Jeff Stinger

A battle of two Southeast teams happens at State Farm Arena Monday afternoon. The second of four regular-season meetings between the Heat and the Hawks will continue after the Heat drew first blood in their November contest. Miami is on a three-game winning streak, including back-to-back wins over 2021 NBA champions Milwaukee Bucks. Meanwhile, Atlanta won three of their last four games and has a shot at scoring a third-straight win in front of their home crowd. This is also their only home game before hitting the road to take on the Dallas Mavericks for the first time in the 2022-23 NBA season.

Why Bet on the Miami Heat?

The Heat will have to operate without starting guard Kyle Lowry and forward Caleb Martin in this contest. Lowry is out with a knee injury and expected to return later this week, while Martin picked up a quadriceps issue and is awaiting a game-time decision regarding his availability. Nevertheless, Miami’s depth looks solid enough to keep the Hawks under pressure come Monday night.

There’s not much to see on paper when it comes to the Heat’s offensive figures. They are one of the lowest-scoring teams now at 108.8 points per game on 45.2% shooting. Miami hits 53.2% of its shots from the two-point range with an underwhelming 34.0% from deep. But, they have a top-two free-throw record at 82.8% from the line. Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, and Edrice Adebayo share most of the scoring load with averages north of 21 points per game.

As a team, the Miami Heat do most of the damage on defense. So it’ll be interesting to see them line up against a more offense-focused side like the Hawks. Erik Spoelstra’s lineup holds the second-best opponent points per game record at 108.5 points per game. They limit competitors to 47.3% shooting and have a solid interior defense that keeps opponents under 45 points in the paint per game.

Why Bet on the Atlanta Hawks?

The Hawks have plenty of work to do if they want a comfortable spot in the Eastern Conference. Their 21-22 win-loss record is only good for the sixth seed now, but the tight race between sixth to eighth seed means plenty of movement happening in the coming days. But, it’s going to be a tricky contest against the Heat with key players Trae Young and Clint Capela on the injury list for Monday’s game.

Young is averaging 27.47 points and 9.82 assists per game but is awaiting a game-time decision following a shoulder injury. Capela also awaits the green light after picking up a calf issue. As a team, the Hawks average 114.9 points per game on 46.8% shooting. They hit 53.4% of short and mid-range attempts while making 33.7% of their looks from deep. The hosts are also competent from the line with an 82.0% free-throw percentage.

Defensively, the Hawks limit its competitors to 115.9 points per game. They also feature proper rim protection that keeps competitors to a 47.0% shooting and a top-five opponent three-point percentage of 34.2%. However, there’s work to do on the rebounding end. Atlanta collects 50.8 total rebounds per game and is only good for a 20th-best record.

  • The Hawks are 3-4 in the last four contests at State Farm Arena (2-4 ATS).

Heat vs. Hawks Expert Betting Prediction

We’re splitting hairs in this matchup. There’s very little separation between the two competitors, but the visitors get a slight advantage coming into the State Farm Arena. With better records, more consistent scorers, and a decent road record, expect the Heat to take things up a notch.

Meanwhile, the Hawks should be in striking distance from their upcoming opponents. If Young suits up, we should see a close scoreline throughout the game. Covering the spread shouldn’t be much of a problem for the hosts. Grabbing the home win is also a plausible scenario for the slight underdogs.
