Las Vegas Raiders 2023 Season Win/Loss Total
The Las Vegas Raiders parted ways with longtime starting quarterback Derek Carr. Head coach Josh McDaniels signed Jimmy Garoppolo, a player he’s familiar with, to sit under center. Jimmy G. is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league, but he’s had injury after injury. Did signing Garoppolo help the Raiders? Will Vegas turn it around this season? New Coach in the Ranks
It seems like forever ago that the Raiders were a wild card team in 2021 despite firing high-profile head coach Jon Gruden during the year. Despite doing a fine job in Gruden’s place, Rich Bisaccia really was never given much thought as the full-time guy because the Raiders were able to lure Josh McDaniels from the Patriots. Many thought he was Bill Belichick’s eventual head coaching successor there. Maybe he still will be as McDaniels might be fired if the Raiders don’t improve on his 6-11 mark from last year.
McDaniels benched the former Pro Bowler Carr for the final two games and he was eventually released despite getting a big new contract following the 2021 season. While the Raiders tried to trade Carr, he refused to waive his-no trade clause. The team cut him right before a Feb. 15 deadline, which would have guaranteed $40.4 million in future earnings for Carr under his previous contract.
He passed for 35,222 yards and 217 touchdowns with the Raiders, both franchise records by wide margins (Hall of Famer Ken Stabler’s second-place numbers are 16,144 yards and 47 TDs fewer). Carr was 63-79 as a starter for the franchise. The Raiders made just two playoff appearances — one in 2016 with him injured and the other in a 2021 season that ended with a wild-card exit. He’s now in New Orleans.
Garoppolo’s New Home
The new starter is former San Francisco 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo, who appeared in three NFC Championship Games and Super Bowl LIV with San Francisco. Last season, Garoppolo played in 11 games with 10 starts and completed 207-of-308 attempts for 2,437 yards with 16 touchdowns against four interceptions for a passer rating of 103.0.
In 57 games with the 49ers, Garoppolo had a passer rating of 99.2 with 13,599 yards, 82 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. As the 49ers’ starter, he had a 38-17 record and won four of his six playoff games. Jimmy G did have offseason foot surgery but he’s fully practicing at camp.
“Never really a worry,” Garoppolo said. “We had a good plan here. The strength staff, training staff, really tip my hat to those guys. They did a great job just getting me back and getting where I need to be. I’m not fully there yet, but working in the right direction.”
The entire QB room is new as in addition to Jimmy G, the Raiders also signed veteran Brian Hoyer in free agency and used a fourth-round draft pick on Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell. It’s the first time the franchise will have an entirely new roster of quarterbacks to start a season since 1999.
Garoppolo has one of the league’s best wideouts at his disposal in Davante Adams, but he forced a trade ahead of last season from Green Bay to play with his boy Carr, a former teammate at Fresno State. Adams, who had 100 catches for 1,516 yards and 14 TDs (on 180 targets) in 17 games last season, wasn’t thrilled when Carr was waived and could demand a trade if things go downhill.
Who Else Could Push the Offense?
The Raiders also added wideout Jakobi Meyers in free agency. Like Garoppolo, Meyers has ties with the Las Vegas brass. Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler and McDaniels were in New England with Meyers from 2019-2021. In 2022, he played in all 14 games with 13 starts for the Pats, recording 67 receptions for 804 yards (12.0 avg.) and a career-high six touchdowns. Meyers set career highs in receptions (83) and receiving yards (866) in 2021.
Running back Josh Jacobs comes off his best season in leading the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards to go with 12 touchdowns on 340 rushing attempts. The team slapped the franchise tag on Jacobs this offseason and he’s not at camp as a sign of protest and claims he could hold out into the regular season. Jacobs was only the second Raider to win the NFL’s rushing title. Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen led the league in rushing in 1985, his MVP season, with 1,759 yards.
“If we really want to have a shot at winning the Super Bowl and having all the elite aspirations that we do, we’re gonna need that guy,” Adams said. “So I’m praying that we can still figure something out, but also understanding where Josh is coming from and trying to coach him through it at the same time.”
