Malcolm Brogdon NBA Futures Odds and Celtics Outlook

By Carlos Chacon

The Boston Celtics were just two wins away from winning the 2023 NBA Finals, and they immediately got right back to business by making quite a splash this offseason. Earlier this week, Boston completed a trade for Indiana Pacers guard Malcolm Brogdon to retool their Eastern Conference Championship-winning core, whilst Indiana received several key pieces to work with as they continue to rebuild.

Nitrobetting is ready to dish out some timely assists to our bettors all throughout the 2022 NBA offseason and beyond. This time, let’s know more about the Boston Celtics’ top offseason acquisition in Malcolm Brogdon, as well as the Celtics’ latest odds to win the 2022-23 NBA championship following Brogdon’s arrival.

Breaking Down Malcolm Brogdon’s Signing With the Boston Celtics

Brogdon Boosts Boston’s Backcourt

Having the best defense in the 2021-22 NBA season means that the Celtics need just a few tweaks to make another run for the Larry O’Brien Trophy this upcoming campaign. That being said, the trade for Indiana’s Malcolm Brogdon makes a lot of sense considering the skill set that the 29-year-old swing guard provides.

Brogdon busted onto the scene immediately in his 2017 rookie season, becoming the first second-round pick to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors since 1965. The borderline-All-Star talent is one of only eight players in league history to become a member of the 50-40-90 club thanks to his superior scoring efficiency campaign during the 2018-19 season.

Although injuries have slowed Brogdon’s momentum time and again over the past few years, he remains a terrific player on both ends of the court. Serving as a backup to either Jaylen Brown or Marcus Smart means that the Celtics will never be short of terrific ball defenders who are also just as reliable on the attack. Brogdon averaged 20 points, five rebounds, and six assists per game across his final two seasons in Indiana.

Keeping Pace With the Rebuild

The first to go for the Pacers’ rebuild that’s now two years in the making was Domantas Sabonis, and now comes the departure of Malcolm Brogdon. This just goes to show how high Indiana is on their acquisition from last year’s Sabonis trade with the Sacramento Kings in Tyrese Haliburton.

Brogdon was no longer a good fit with Indy’s youth-heavy reclamation. Thus, trading experience for multiple assets makes a lot of sense for the Pacers. They received five relatively unproven talents in the form of Daniel Theis, Nik Stauskas, Aaron Nesmith, Juwan Morgan, and Malik Fitts. Indiana also got Boston’s first-round pick in 2023, which may be the most valuable trade chip of them all.

None of those names really stand out outside of Theis, who got solid minutes in the postseason as the Celtics’ backup center. Nevertheless, the Pacers have nothing to lose this coming season as they still figure out how to properly build around Haliburton’s strengths. Perhaps the likes of forgotten prospect Stauskas or another underrated bench player in Nesmith will turn out to be a hidden gem in this deal as well.
