Why Bet on the Toronto Maple Leafs?

In a must-win situation in Game 3 Sunday, the Toronto Maple Leafs were on the receiving end of a brutal 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of the Florida Panthers. Toronto has scored just two goals in each of the first three games of the second round despite boasting a wealth of talent on offense.

The Maple Leafs had the lead on two separate occasions in Game 3, with the first goal from Sam Lafferty in the opening period and Erik Gustafsson’s wrister in the middle of the second period. Unfortunately, neither Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, nor John Tavares factored into Sunday’s contest as Toronto’s three biggest stars were held without a single point that night.

There’s also a silver lining to be had with backup goalie Joseph Woll’s subpar effort between the pipes in Game 3. Incumbent starter Ilya Samsonov has not had the best of performances himself during the first two games of the series, but the Leafs will have to resort back to Samsonov after the Woll experiment was a relative failure.

Why Bet on the Florida Panthers?

With the massive Game 3 victory, the Florida Panthers are just one game away from making the Conference Finals for the first time since 1996. Sam Reinhart was the unlikely hero of Sunday’s win after the unheralded 27-year-old knocked in the game-winner a little over just three minutes into overtime.

The Panthers played an all-around clean game by not giving the Maple Leafs a single power-play opportunity in Game 3. They were also more aggressive at getting the puck in their hands with 14 takeaways to just three for Toronto. Star center Carter Verhaeghe also scored for Florida to give the former Stanley Cup champ three goals in his last four starts.

Make that five winning starts in a row as well for former two-time Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 22 saves on Sunday to limit Toronto’s offense yet again. Everything seems to be clicking for the Panthers, who are seemingly destined for a serious run for the Stanley Cup, especially with how terrific they looked in upsetting the top-seeded Boston Bruins in the first round.

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Betting Trends

  • The Maple Leafs won six straight road games prior to Sunday’s loss.
  • The Leafs are just 1-3 in its last four meetings against the Panthers.
  • The totals went under in seven of Toronto’s last 10 road games.
  • The Panthers are 2-4 in the last six road games.
  • The Panthers have won six straight games as underdogs.
  • The totals went under in each of Florida’s last three outings.

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Game 4 Expert Betting Predictions

As amazing as Florida has been since stunning the Bruins in the first round, we predict that Toronto will steal Game 4 playing with a ton of desperation. The Maple Leafs have been decent road warriors of late and have too much firepower to ignore. Meanwhile, the Panthers could be more complacent in Wednesday’s close-out game, especially if they decide to give Bobrovsky the day off in front of his team’s net.
