Three Missed Field Goals In OT Highlight Early Week 1 Games of the 2022 NFL Season

By Jeff Stinger

With teams still trying to find their foothold in the very first week of action this 2022 NFL season, it only stands to reason that there will be some sloppy gameplay to be had. A pair of divisional showdowns from the early afternoon slate of Week 1 can certainly attest to that, as multiple sequences of wild special teams performances made for some very entertaining viewing experiences.

What Happened to the Special Teams During NFL Week 1?

The first heartbreaking special teams blunder came from Indianapolis kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, who had his 42-yard field-goal attempt in overtime sail wide right in the Colts’ first meeting of the season against the Falcons.  Indy and Houston would not come close to scoring another point in the final two minutes of OT, which resulted in a rather lackluster 20-20 tie ball game.

The Steelers-Bengals contest, meanwhile, saw not one, not two, but three combined missed field goals by both sides. The first blunder was by Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson, who missed what should’ve been a freebie extra-point attempt as time expired in regulation:

McPherson would go on to miss another kick in the ensuing overtime period; a 29-yard gimme of an attempt if he’d ever seen one:

However, Pittsburgh’s own kicker, Chris Boswell, would also miss his own 55-yard attempt in the following drive:

Unlike McPherson, though, Boswell would go on to redeem himself by nailing his next attempt, which was a 53-yard boot as time expired in OT to give the Steelers a wild 23-20 victory:

The twists and turns from that Steelers-Bengals clash make it a strong candidate for the best game in Week 1. Here’s hoping that more thrilling contests are on the horizon that can rival the drama that these heated NFC North rivals brought to the table.

Oh, and we didn’t even count the Saints’ blocked kick in the fourth quarter by the Falcons’ Younghoe Koo which would’ve won the game for Atlanta. Talk about a smashing opening week of football, eh?
