Why Bet on the Edmonton Oilers?

Six days after getting out shot 34-10 but winning 2-1 over the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, Edmonton was all over Florida in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals with a 32-18 shot advantage.

The lopsided shot advantage, coupled with an 18-6 lead in high-danger scoring chances, gave the Oilers plenty of optimism despite the Game 1 defeat.

Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner obviously got no offensive help in the opener and allowed two goals on 17 shots. The 25-year-old has allowed two or fewer goals in eight of his last nine games, going 6-3 in that span. He’s now 11-6 with a 2.47 GAA and an .897 save percentage through 17 playoff appearances.

Edmonton’s Connor McDavid has amassed 31 points in the 2024 playoffs which was tied with Mark Recchi (1991) and Mark Messier (1988) for the fifth-highest point total by a player entering their team’s Stanley Cup Finals opener, behind Wayne Gretzky (36 in 1985, 34 in 1983 & 33 in 1993) and Mario Lemieux (32 in 1991).

McDavid needs one assist to tie Nikita Kucherov (27 in 2020) for the most assists in one playoff year among active players; Hyman needs one goal to match Sidney Crosby (15 in 2009) and Alex Ovechkin (15 in 2018) in that group for goals; and Evan Bouchard needs one assist to break a tie with Cale Makar (21 in 2022) for the most assists in one playoff year by an active defenseman and two points to equal him among that grouping for points.

During these playoffs, the Oilers have proven their ability to bounce back from defeats with a 5-1 record following losses in the 2024 postseason, where they’ve outscored their opponents 21-12. Teams that take a 2-0 series lead in a Stanley Cup Final hold an all-time series record of 49-5 (.907), and a 39-3 record (.929) when starting at home. When it’s tied 1-1, the results are split down the middle at 30-30.

Why Bet on the Florida Panthers?

Florida has won four straight games in these playoffs (after trailing the New York Rangers 2-1 in the East Finals) after a 3-0 victory over visiting Edmonton in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday. Sergei Bobrovsky was stellar in the victory with 32 saves.

Of Bobrovsky’s saves, 13 were considered high-danger. “Every win’s a big win, but it’s a long series,” said Bobrovsky, who pitched the NHL’s first shutout in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final since 2011. “We’re going to reset, refocus and get ready for the next fight.”

Bobrovsky became the oldest goaltender ever to open the Stanley Cup Final with a shutout, supplanting Patrick Roy (35 years, 233 days in 2001). It marked the first time the Panthers recorded a shutout in the Finals, and Bobrovsky’s franchise record-setting 13th victory this postseason.

Bobrovsky’s shutout was the 16th ever in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and seventh in the past 76 years. The overall total includes two shutouts in the same contest, by Hal Winkler and Alec Connell in a 0-0 tie to open the 1927 Final. Bobrovsky improved to 13-5 with a 2.08 GAA and a .915 save percentage over 18 appearances in these playoffs. He is the only goaltender with multiple shutouts this postseason.

Carter Verhaeghe opened the scoring in Game 1 and is up to 10 goals this postseason, four of which he’s scored over the last seven games. The 28-year-old forward converted after a spring pass from Aleksander Barkov in the first period, and that goal was all the Panthers needed. It was the 13th time he has scored a go-ahead goal in the postseason, tops among all players since 2021 (when he joined the Panthers and when he scored his first career playoff goal). Verhaeghe continues to shine in a top-line role with 18 points and 64 shots on net 18 playoff outings.

Evan Rodrigues scored in the second period and Eetu Luostarinen completed the scoring late in the third on an empty net. The 30-year-old Rodrigues had gone nine games without a goal. He’s up to nine points in these playoffs. Aleksander Barkov added two assists and has a goal and five assists over his last five contests. The 28-year-old is firmly in the Conn Smythe conversation with six goals, 13 helpers, 47 shots on net, 40 hits, 17 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating over 18 playoff appearances, to go along with his usual excellent defensive work.

Florida holds a series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time. Nine of the past 11 opening games in the Stanley Cup Finals have now been won by the home team.
