Oregon State vs. Washington State 2023 College Football Week 4 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

Oregon State and Washington State are the only Pac-12 teams who don’t know where they will be playing next season as they have been left behind by all the other schools leaving for the Big 12, Big Ten and ACC. Wouldn’t it be fitting if one of them won the conference in its final season? The No. 21 Cougars host the No. 14 Beavers in a huge game Saturday.

Oregon State Beavers vs. Washington State Cougars Game Information

Why Bet on the Oregon State Beavers?

Oregon State and Washington State are meeting for the first time since 2003 with both teams ranked. OSU is looking for its first win in Pullman since 2013, and back-to-back wins over the Cougars for the first time since 2012-13.

No. 14 Oregon State (3-0) closed non-conference play with a 26-9 win over San Diego State on Saturday. D.J Uiagalelei completed 14-of-30 passes for 284 yards with a touchdown through the air and another on the ground. Damien Martinez rushed for more than 100 yards for the ninth time in his young career with 102 on the ground. Defensively, OSU held the Aztecs to 70 yards rushing – more than 100 below their season average — aided by six sacks.

Oregon State has scored on the first drive in all three games this season and nine of its last 15 dating back to the start of 2022. The Beavers have now held opponents to 20 points or less in four straight games for the first time since doing so in five straight from 2001-2002.

OSU is 3-0 to start a season for the 21st time in program history. The Beavers have done so in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1999-2000. Oregon State is looking to become 4-0 for the first time since the 2012 season when the Beavers started 6-0. Oregon State has not trailed this season, and has led for all but 19:13 of its 180 minutes played this season. The Beavers have won seven consecutive games for the first time since 2000.

Oregon State ranks 13th nationally in total defense, allowing 260 yards allowed per game. The Beavers have 26 tackles for loss and have allowed only 173 rushing yards — 57.7 per game – which ranks sixth nationally and first in the Pac-12. Opponents are averaging just 2.0 yards per carry.

Saturday’s matchup gives the Beavers two straight against ranked foes in Pac-12 play. The Beavers ended the 2022 regular season with a 38-34 win over No. 9 Oregon. OSU came from 21 points down in the win over the Ducks. Oregon State is 2-7 against ranked teams under head coach Jonathan Smith, with both wins coming against Oregon.

Why Bet on the Washington State Cougars?

Washington State (3-0) comes off a 64-21 home rout of Northern Colorado. Cameron Ward passed for 327 yards and accounted for five first-half touchdowns. The junior quarterback completed his first 12 passes — including a 37-yard touchdown strike to Kyle Williams and a 28-yard TD pass to Lincoln Victor — to give Wazzu a 22-0 lead in the first quarter. Victor had six catches for 119 yards with a pair of TDs. Ward also ran for an 8-yard touchdown on Washington State’s opening possession. He completed 20 of 26 passes.

WSU’s 43 points in the first half were the most since scoring 55 points in the first half against Arizona (2018). WSU has recorded 50+ points in two of the first three games for the first time since 2019. WSU’s 718 yards of total offense were the third-most in WSU single-game history. Ward leads the Cougars in rushing with 95 yards and three touchdowns. Through the air, Ward is 77 of 107 for 990 yards and nine touchdowns, with no interceptions.

Washington State leads the all-time series against Oregon State 56-48-3. Last year, Oregon State won 24-10 at home. OSU rushed for 203 yards and Jack Colletto ran for two short touchdowns. The Cougars relied almost exclusively on the arm of quarterback Cameron Ward, who threw 54 passes in the game. Trailing by 14 points with six minutes remaining, Ward was forced out of the pocket on fourth-and-8 from the Cougars’ 37-yard line and his desperation heave fell incomplete. Oregon State missed a 31-yard field goal with about three minutes left that would have made it a three-score game, but the Beavers defense sealed the win.

Saturday is just the second time in program history that Oregon State has its game nationally televised on FOX. The first time was 2012, when the No. 13 Beavers lost to No. 16 Stanford 27-23.
