Why Bet on the Oregon Ducks?

Oregon, Oregon State, Utah and USC all have one conference loss with Washington leading the Pac-12 and yet to lose in league play or overall. Oregon’s only loss was at Washington two weeks ago and the Ducks bounced back from that with a 38-24 win over Washington State on Saturday. The win was the 699th in Oregon football history.

Bo Nix threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Bucky Irving scored twice on the ground and once on a reception. Irving ran for 129 yards and Jordan James added another 103 rushing yards as the balanced UO offense threw for 293 yards and ran for 248. It was Irving’s third straight game with a rushing touchdown (seven on the season and 16 in his career) and second straight 100-yard rushing performance (third of the season) and seventh as a Duck (10th career).

Oregon held a 248-57 edge in rushing yards, eclipsed 200 rushing yards for the sixth time this season and averaged 7.8 yards per carry (entered game leading the nation at 6.6 ypc).

Nix is now the NCAA’s all-time record-holder for career starts by a quarterback with 54. He completed 18-of-25 passes for 293 yards and has 16 rushing touchdowns in 20 games as a Duck and is No. 2 among active QBs with 34 career rushing touchdowns. Nix now ranks 15th in NCAA history with 14,417 career total yards, tied for 16th with 1,104 career completions, tied for 26th with 122 career total touchdowns, and 22nd with 12,933 career passing yards. He is 16 rushing yards away from 1,500 for his career.

Oregon is 4-0 following a loss under Dan Lanning and 10-3 since 2018 after a loss. The Ducks didn’t commit a turnover for the sixth time in seven games this season and have the fewest turnovers in the nation (1).

Why Bet on the Utah Utes?

Utah upset No. 18 USC on Saturday, 34-32 in Los Angeles. Utah trailed with 1:52 remaining with the Trojans taking a 32-31 lead on a quarterback keeper with the Utes starting on their own 25-yard line to start their final drive. Quarterback Bryson Barnes orchestrated a gritty performance as time ticked away that included third and fourth down conversions to keep the drive alive, getting the Utes to the USC 19-yard line with just three seconds left to play. Kicker Cole Becker lined up for the 38-yarder, sending it right down the middle to win the game and send the Utes home with its fourth straight victory against the Trojans.

Utah racked up season-highs across the board on offense, producing 482 yards on which included 235 through the air and 247 rushing. Utah averaged 16.8 yards per completion and 5.3 yards per rush with 6.9 yards per play overall, also winning the time of possession battle at 34:42 to 25:18.

Quarterback Bryson Barnes made his fourth start of the season and is 5-0 all-time as the starter at Utah. His 235 passing yards and three passing touchdowns were career-highs, while Barnes set season-bests with 57 rushing yards and a long rush of 26 yards. Safety Sione Vaki, lining up at running back and out of the Wildcat, combined for 216 yards of offense (68 rushing, 149 receiving) and two receiving touchdowns (53 yards and 15 yards). His touchdown receptions were the first of his career. Vaki’s five receptions, 149 receiving yards and two scores were all career-bests.

Running back Ja’Quinden Jackson had 26 carries for 117 yards. It pushed Jackson over the 1,000-yard mark for his career on the heels of his fourth career 100-yard game (last at Baylor on Sept. 9). Tight end Landen King had a six-yard touchdown during the third quarter. It was King’s second touchdown reception as a Ute (the other came vs. UCLA) and the third of his collegiate career (one with Auburn during 2021).

Utah carries an 18-game home winning streak into this one. It is the second-longest streak in the Kyle Whittingham era with the longest streak taking place Sept. 15, 2007 to Oct. 23, 2010 (21 games).

It’s the 37th all-time meeting between these schools with Oregon leading 24-12. It won last year 17-10 at home as Nix threw for 287 yards and one touchdown despite a lower leg injury. Oregon’s defense limited the Utes to just 326 total yards.
