Oregon vs. Washington 2023 Pac-12 Championship Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

Not only is the Pac-12 title on the line Friday when No. 3 Washington takes on No. 5 Oregon in the conference title tilt but also a spot in the College Football Playoff and probably the Heisman Trophy to either Huskies QB Michael Penix Jr. or Ducks signal-caller Bo Nix — whichever wins the game. It’s also the last time UW and Oregon play as Pac-12 members as they are headed to the Big Ten next year.

The winner of this game will be in the College Football Playoff and the loser will be headed to the Rose Bowl. Washington is one of a few unbeatens still standing and beat visiting Oregon 36-33 on Oct. 14 in a great game. Penix hit Rome Odunze on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:38 remaining for the winning points. The Ducks’ and Camden Lewis missed a 43-yard field goal attempt on the final play. The 115th matchup between the rivals was the first that featured both teams ranked in the Top 10. Penix needed just two plays to go 53 yards in 33 seconds after Oregon was stopped on fourth-and-3 at the Washington 47 with 2:11 remaining. It was Penix’s fourth touchdown pass of the game and his second time connecting with Odunze, who had eight catches for 128 yards. Nix finished 33 of 44 passing for 337 yards and threw two touchdowns.

Why Bet on the Oregon Ducks?

Oregon (11-1) comes off a 31-7 win over Oregon State on Friday, the Ducks’ sixth straight win. Nix burnished his credentials for the Heisman Trophy by going 33-of-40 for 367 yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown. Looking to avenge a loss to Oregon State in 2022, Oregon allowed but a single touchdown Friday, shortly before halftime. That cut the UO lead to 14-7 with 54 seconds left in the half, but the Ducks answered on a pass from Nix to Troy Franklin, who scored his UO-record 25th career receiving touchdown with 8 seconds left.

Franklin had nine receptions for 128 yards and a score, and Tez Johnson added 11 receptions for 137 yards. Bucky Irving caught the other touchdown pass from Nix, and Jordan James rushed for the touchdown that made it 31-7 early in the fourth quarter.

“I’ve said all season, we want to be playing our best football at the end of the season,” UO coach Dan Lanning said. “We are right now.”

Why Bet on the Washington Huskies?

Washington won the Apple Cup over Washington State on Saturday, 24-21. If this game comes down to a final-play field goal to determine things, the Huskies have the edge in Grady Gross, who ended the Apple Cup with a game-winning 42-yard field goal with all zeroes on the clock. Gross has been good on 11 of 15 field-goal attempts this season. Penix Jr. now has 3,899 passing yards this season, third-most in UW history (behind only his 2022 total – 4,641; and Cody Pickett’s 4,458 in 2002). He also has 32 TD passes for the season, passing last year’s total of 31, good for No. 3 in UW history. His 63 career TDs are also good for third. Odunze notched the eighth 100-yard receiving game of the season, finishing the game with seven catches for 120 yards, and two touchdowns. For the season, Odunze now has 1,326 yards, second in UW single-season history. Odunze’s 13 touchdowns this season are fourth-most in UW single-season history. With 24 in his career, he’s tied for third on the Husky career top-10 (record is 30, Mario Bailey, 1988-91). Running back and Mississippi State transfer Dillon Johnson needs 39 yards to become a 1,000-yard rusher, which would make him the Huskies’ first since Salvon Ahmed collected 1,020 in 2019. After a key fourth-down conversion late vs. Oregon State, the Huskies are 11-for-14 (79%) on fourth-down attempts this year. Opponents are 13-for-33 on fourth down (39%). This season, Washington has never trailed by more than seven points. The Huskies never trailed at all in seven of 12 games (including today vs. WSU). Over a total of 720 minutes this season, the Huskies have trailed for just 95 minutes and 38 seconds, meaning they’ve been tied or ahead for 624 minutes and 22 seconds. Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer is now 102-11 as a head coach, and is 23-2 at UW, including 14-0 at home. He is 31-1 in games in the month of November as a head coach. Washington has won 19 straight games, the second-longest active streak in the country, behind Georgia, and the third-longest in Husky history (longer UW streaks: 40 straight wins 1908-16; 22 straight wins 1990-92). UW is 1-1 all-time playing in Las Vegas, both in Las Vegas Bowls. It beat Boise State 38-7 in 2019 and lost to the Broncos 28-26 in 2012. Oregon is 1-3 in Vegas, beating Air Force 41-13 in 1997 and losing to BYU 38-8 in 2006 and to Boise State 38-28 in 2017, all in the Vegas Bowl, and losing to Utah 38-10 in the 2021 Pac-12 championship game at Allegiant Stadium.
