Why Bet on the Carolina Panthers?
After picking up their first win of the season in the final week of October, the Carolina Panthers went back to their losing ways in Week 9, falling at home to the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, 27-13. Carolina remains one of only two teams with two victories at the halfway point of the season, but could very well improve in a more favorable matchup against the two-win Bears.
Then again, the Panthers’ future franchise quarterback Bryce Young still needs much work. Young, the first-overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, had arguably his worst performance in the pros, with the rookie throwing three interceptions – two of them being pick-sixes – and finishing with just 173 passing yards. At least his team’s running game was more respectable, gaining 138 rushing yards and with Young accounting for 41 of those yards on five carries.
Carolina’s defense, strangely enough, is ranked eighth in the NFL allowing just an average of 310 yards per contest. However, the team is now tied for dead-last with the Broncos for the worst scoring defense in the league (28.3 PAPG) no thanks to the recent myriad of turnovers caused by the offense.
Why Bet on the Chicago Bears?
Week 7’s win over the Raiders now feels light years in the past, as the Chicago Bears are back to their bumbling ways following their 24-17 defeat to the New Orleans Saints in Week 9. That’s now back-to-back losses for the Bears, who cannot wait for starting QB Justin Fields (thumb) to return from his injury hiatus.
In the meantime, Chicago might have to bear with backup youngster Tyson Bagent on MNF with Fields’ status to return still up in the air. Bagent had a mixed bag of an outing this past weekend, completing 18 of 30 passes for 220 yards and a pair of TD throws, albeit also with three INTs. On the bright side, running back and fellow backup D’Onta Foreman continues to excel in place of Khalil Herbert (ankle), gaining 83 rushing yards on 20 carries.
Herbert was a full participant in the team’s first practice session this week, which could be a sign that the Bears’ lead back could be activated off of the injured reserve list before Thursday night’s game. Then again, their defense shares the same concern as Carolina’s, as the Bears are giving up an average of 26.9 points per game, which is tied for third worst in the NFL this season.
Panthers vs. Bears Betting Trends
- Carolina is 1-5 on the road this calendar year (SU/ATS).
- The Panthers are also 1-5 in their last six outings against NFC North teams (3-3 ATS)
- The totals went over in each of Carolina’s last three road games.
- Chicago is 1-10 in their last 11 home games (3-7-1 ATS).
- The Bears are winless in their last six meetings versus teams from the NFC South (2-4 ATS).
- The totals went over in three of the last four games played in Solider Field.
Panthers vs. Bears Expert Betting Predictions
There’s plenty of optimism in the Windy City leading up to TNF, as both Fields and Herbert are expected to return from their respective injuries this week. Should either of the two be given the green light to play in primetime, the Bears are the easy pick to win this relative dud of a nationally televised contest. But if the pairing of Bagent and Foreman keep their positions as Chicago’s starting offensive backbone, then the Panthers could be the crafty underdog pick of the week who are more than capable of staging an upset given the right matchup such as this.
