San Francisco 49ers 2022 Top MVP Sleeper Pick

By Carlos Chacon

A third-place finish in the crowded NFC West did not stop the San Francisco 49ers from making another deep playoff run in the 2021 NFL season. That’s now two trips to the NFC Championship Game over the last three years for the Niners, who have plenty of sleeper potential in terms of producing the next regular season MVP. However, there are some concerns about those exceptional players as well.

With that, Nitrobetting sheds light on the top sleeper MVP candidate for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFL season.

Flashes in the Pan

After San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan recently announced that second-year quarterback Trey Lance will be his team’s starting quarterback this upcoming season, the hype surrounding the third-overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft is at an all-time high. So much so that Lance is currently a (+5,000) sleeper candidate to win the league MVP award in a breakout sophomore campaign. The two-time FCS champion started just two games for the Niners in his rookie season and will now have the opportunity to join the ranks of other young gunslingers taking the NFL by storm.

Incumbent starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo, meanwhile, has been bumped down to a less-than encouraging +10,000 sleeper status and Shanahan’s announcement and will likely see Jimmy G’s odds take a bigger dip from here on out. Meanwhile, there’s still great value to be had from another offensive wonder in flex wideout Deebo Samuel. Samuel is a solid +6,000 dark horse pick in his own right, finishing with over 1,400 receiving yards whilst also having eight rushing touchdowns; the most in a single season by any wide receiver in league history.

The Niners’ running game might not call on Samuel out of the backfield as often this coming season, though, especially with the stud wideout still negotiating his contract extension with the team after expressing his frustrations of having to fill in at running back for added wear and tear to his body. That being said, running back Elijah Mitchell (+15,000) is worth a look as well. In his NFL debut from last season, Mitchell finished with 963 rushing yards in just 11 games played and would’ve been a 1,000-yard rusher had he been given more snaps early in the season.

Another gold nugget in San Fran lies in the team’s defense, as edge rusher Nick Bosa is also a +25,000 sleeper candidate to win the NFL Most Valuable Player of the Year award. The 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year recovered mightily from his season-ending injury in 2020 by playing all 17 regular-season games in 2021 whilst setting new career-highs of 15.5 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles.

Updated 49ers’ Super Bowl 57 Odds

As of this writing, the 49ers are +1,630 sleepers to win Super Bowl LVII; the eighth-best odds amongst all NFL teams to date. The Niners also have the second-best odds to win the NFC West title at +175, trailing only the reigning Super Bowl champions the Los Angeles Rams at +135. The Rams are also +975 favorites to repeat as SB champs.
