Sergio Perez and Red Bull Future

By Jeff Stinger

Sergio Perez’s future with Red Bull Racing hangs by a thread as talks for next season’s contracts anticipate movements. The Mexican driver, despite his recently-renewed contract, faces an ultimatum that could see former Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo take his seat next year. This condition becomes apparent if he fails to secure second place in the 2023 season. The talks come after a string of underwhelming performances by Perez in recent months.

Checo Under the Microscope

Sergio Perez needs to perform in the last five races of the calendar or face the gauntlet. The 33-year-old has been marked by disappointing results, putting Red Bull Racing’s patience to the test. He has to make a final push to secure P2 in the Drivers’ World Championship race. If he falls short of this goal, we expect the Milton Keynes-based constructor looking for a more consistent wheelman right behind number one driver and three-time champion Max Verstappen.

Despite having one of the most dominant machines in Formula 1 history, Perez struggled to outscore Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes man is 30 points behind Checo and the performance gap starts to show. It’s not a good look considering Perez shares the same RB19 car with his teammate, who leads the championship with almost double the points of his Mexican partner. Both drivers are neck and neck in the upcoming USA GP, with the Red Bull man coming in at +1,800 favorite and the seven-time World Champion right behind him at +2,300.

Despite rumors, a recent statement from the former Racing Point driver has potentially extinguished the speculations regarding his departure from Red Bull and Formula 1. More than that, the Mexican driver states that he intends to keep his seat and stay in the sport for at least three more years. That said, Checo understands the need to keep his foot on the gas with these last races potentially being the most important of his career.

Daniel Ricciardo gears up to take over his seat if he fails to meet the team’s target. The 34-year-old Aussie driver previously drove for Red Bull before his voyage with McLaren and Renault hoping to find a championship-winning season. However, things didn’t pan out well for the Honey Badger as his performance dipped since departing Red Bull.

After jumping back into the cockpit of a Formula 1 car after a short hiatus, he aims to prove his worth to the grid in the upcoming US GP as a +10,000 sleeper pick. Nonetheless, he is a proven Grand Prix winner and a competitive driver once fires on all cylinders.
