Akiem’s Super Bowl Dream
When the Buccaneers freed up a slot on their 90-man offseason roster by releasing wide receiver Travis Jonsen on Tuesday, they were quick to sign Chicago Bears defensive end Akiem Hicks to a one-year deal to shore up their front seven.
Hicks, a former Pro Bowl selection in 2018 and was recently named as one of the 100 best Bears players of all-time, adds depth and veteran experience to an already stout Tampa Bay front seven. And despite missing eight games due to injuries last season, The 32-year-old still put up 25 combined tackles (19 solo), nine QB hits, and 3.5 sacks in nine starts. Hicks joins a D-Line unit of hulks already anchored by standouts Vita Vea and Will Gholston.
Suh… What’s Next for the Bucs?
One might argue that the Buccaneers may have one too many D-linemen on their roster and that getting Hicks is quite redundant. However, it’s worth noting that two notable names on the defensive line, Ndamukong Suh and Steve McLendon, are still unsigned free agents to date.
That being said, acquiring Hicks on a rental deal is Tampa Bay’s way of having depth on the D-line in the event that the team does not come to terms with new deals for either Suh or McLendon. The Bucs did restructure Brady’s contract in late April to free up $9 million in cap space this season, but $6.5 million of that went to Hicks’ contract already (with up to $1.5 million in bonuses as well).
It seems as though the Buccaneers are prepared to see either Suh or McLendon go, and it’s a good thing they picked up someone like Hicks on the cheap as a serviceable replacement for either man.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Latest Odds to Win Super Bowl 57
As of this writing, the Buccaneers are +700 favorites to win Super Bowl LII; the second-best odds amongst all 32 NFL teams only behind the Buffalo Bills (+600). The Bucs are also odds-on favorites to win the NFC title at +275 over two other strong contenders in the Green Bay Packers and the reigning Super Bowl champs, the Los Angeles Rams (both priced at +450 apiece to win the conference).
