Is Drew Brees Returning to the NFL?

By Carlos Chacon

To quote Al Pacino from The Godfather Part III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” This is certainly the feeling that Drew Brees is having, as the former Super Bowl MVP and 13-time Pro Bowl selection teased a return to the NFL after just one year in the broadcasting booth. Tom Brady came out of retirement just months after he left the game, so is Brees the next legendary quarterback to pull a Brett Farve?

Nitrobetting is ready to equip its bettors with the latest news, futures odds, and special features for the duration of the 2022 NFL offseason. This time, let’s take a closer look at the three best landing spots for Drew Brees in the event that he makes his unretirement official prior to the start of the upcoming football season.

New Orleans Saints

The obvious choice for Drew Brees is to rejoin the team that turned him into a household name in the NFL: the New Orleans Saints. Last season, a season-ending injury to Jameis Winston derailed New Orleans’ season and it was clear that neither Taysom Hill nor Andy Dalton was fit to start under center for an entire campaign.

That being said, the Saints would gladly welcome Brees back with open arms, especially considering that they finished dead-last in the league with merely 187.4 passing yards per game. Heck, maybe even head coach Sean Payton will come out of retirement as well and join Brees for one or two more seasons trying to relive the glory of their magical Super Bowl run in 2009.

Carolina Panthers

There are plenty of teams who could still use a proven quarterback, and one of those teams happens to be the Saints’ division rival in the Carolina Panthers. Sam Darnold looked good early in 2021 before getting hurt and underperforming the rest of the way, and Carolina didn’t reach for a QB in this year’s draft and settled for UNC’s Matt Corral with their third-round pick.

Joining Carolina would mean that Brees would be seen as a villain in the eyes of the Big Easy fan base. Is Brees willing to change his public image by doing so? Nevertheless, the Panthers would want nothing more than to have the 43-year-old veteran either start a full campaign or simply act as a credible mentor to further develop Darnold, Corral, and even third-string option P.J. Walker on the sidelines.

Houston Texans

The Seattle Seahawks make a compelling case amongst all QB-needy teams in the league right now, but perhaps the Houston Texans have an ace up their sleeves that the Seahawks could only wish they could pull out of their bag. As a Dallas native, Brees will be closer to his hometown even more so than the quick interstate trip that he was afforded during his decorated stint in New Orleans.

Houston also has a promising play-caller in Davis Mills, who could take a backseat for a year or two learning from arguably the most accurate QB of all-time. Brees will also avoid constant comparisons with Brady as his division rival and will likely relish the challenge of going up against the AFC’s young gunslingers like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson for a change.
