Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – August 1, 2022

By Jeff Stinger

As the anticipation for the final major of the season in the US Open grows by the day, we’re left with a few more stops on the American hardcourts, including this week’s trip to D.C. for the 2022 Citi Open. Check out the best matches from the opening round of the Citi Open set to begin this Monday.

Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week (August 1st, 2022)

ATP – Citi Open 2022 – Rock Creek Park, Washington DC, USA

Nick Kyrgios vs. Marcos Giron

Nick Kyrgios enters the Washington Open as the 47th ranked player on the ATP Tour. He is unseeded at the tournament but looks good after a first-runner-up finish at Wimbledon. The Aussie has a reputation for being inconsistent and unpredictable, but the 2022 season proves he is a top contender to win the tournament. Kyrgios enters the hard court loaded with confidence. When he is fully focused only a few players are capable of going toe to toe with him. He enters the contest as the favorite over Giron.

Meanwhile, the (+324) underdog Marcos Giron also enters the tournament as an unseeded player. He is ranked below the Aussie at No. 55 but is a solid baseline player. With consistency and composure, we expect Giron to frustrate his Aussie opponent. The American needs to be at his best form to put pressure on Kyrgios early into the tournament.

Tennis Betting Pick: Nick Kyrgios (-417)

Andy Murray vs. Mikael Ymer

Andy Murray opens his Citi Open account against a young Swede Mikael Ymer. The British tennis legend is heavily favored to take this game despite going through rough patches over the last few years. Nevertheless, he seems to be finding his form and delivered strong results recently, improving his ranking to No. 50. After solid performances on grass, he returns to the hard court, where he plays better.

Ymer might not have the upper hand on paper and at #108 in the world rankings, but he did register an impressive 2021 campaign where he made the top 75 for the first time in his career. The Swedish tennis player packs skill and talent, but he has to step up to get past Murray early into the tournament.

Tennis Betting Pick: Andy Murray (-303)

Mackenzie McDonald vs. Emil Ruusuvuori

The odds are tight between the two players. Ruusuvori has the better record of the two players, winning 27 of 47 games in 2022. He shines on different surfaces and has plenty of youthful energy to bring to the court. Ruusuvuori continues his search for a first hard-court tournament title this year. But with a 10-6 record on the surface this season, he pumps his numbers up enough to enter the match as the favorite.

In McDonald’s recent competition, he lost in the hands of Jenson Brooksby in the Round of 16 of the Truist Atlanta Open. He was dropped in two sets the last time he competed. While he hasn’t won any of his 20 tournaments this year, he puts up a 10-10 match record on the surface. Furthermore, McDonald reached the final in Washington last year, before losing to Jannik Sinner in three sets. If he brings that form back, we look forward to better numbers coming from the 27-year-old.

Tennis Betting Pick: Emil Ruusuvuori (-143)

David Goffin vs. Jack Sock

Goffin returns to the court after his Wimbledon campaign. While he missed some time last year following a knee injury, he made up for lost time this year and delivered decent results. He’s been solid with a 26-17 record and a trophy. The Belgian is close to returning to the top 50 and he’ll have a shot during the North American season. His serve and groundstrokes play well with the faster courts of Rock Creek Park but he needs to be careful and hold off break points.

The other end of the court shows a determined Jack Sock. Despite playing as the (+130) underdog in this contest, we’ve seen him play some of the best tennis he’s performed this year. The American holds a 29-14 record this year, including challenger level and ATP level wins. He can make it back to the top 100 if he closes more solid matches in the coming days.

Tennis Betting Pick: David Goffin (-152)

Adrian Mannarino vs Bradley Klahn

It’s been a series of up and down moments for Mannarino this season. He started the year on a positive note, reaching the fourth round of the French Open and three consecutive quarter-final appearances in Montpellier, Dallas, and Delray Beach. Additionally, he did well to recover from a downturn back in Atlanta, going through qualifying to make his fifth quarter-final appearance of the year before losing to Alex de Minaur.

Opponent Klahn hopes to produce better results after his injury woes. He returned to the main tour in June after missing over 18 months of tennis due to third back surgery. The American tennis player holds a career-best ranking of 63rd in the world. Despite a lack of success since returning to the main tour stage, his wild card entry and (+494) underdog odds make for an interesting matchup against the French veteran player.

Tennis Betting Pick: Adrian Mannarino (-714)
