Why bet on the Minnesota Twins?

The Twins have two players on the injured list in infielder Jorge Polanco and outfielder Trevor Larnach. While Polanco (.245, seven HRs, 33 RBIs) could be back at some point this week from his back injury, Larnach (.231, five HRs, 18 RBIs) is expected to miss six weeks following core muscle surgery.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill (4-4, 3.76 ERA) is scheduled to start for Cleveland on the mound Wednesday. Quantrill pitched five innings of two-run ball last Friday against the Red Sox. He didn’t pitch great with only 55 of his 89 pitches as strikes but was helped by an outfield assist at home and a pickoff of Christian Vazquez at second base. He was also fortunate that Jarren Duran’s liner with the bases loaded in the second was hit right at center fielder Myles Straw.

Quantrill has not faced the Twins this season and was 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 26.2 innings against them in 2021. Luis Arraez, having an All-Star season, is 4-for-13 with two doubles career off him. Byron Buxton is 0-for-2 with a walk. Max Kepler 1-for-10 with a homer.

It’s inconsistent right-hander Dylan Bundy (4-4, 4.80 ERA) on the bump for the Twins. He is capable of being dominant one start and terrible the next. He was very good last Friday against Colorado, allowing one run over six. Bundy scattered four hits, issued two walks, and struck out two.

It has been an encouraging stretch for Bundy, who threw eight innings of one-run ball against the D-backs in his previous outing, with the veteran starting to turn the corner from a rough stretch of seven starts from late April to early June in which he posted an 8.51 ERA and opposing hitters posted a 1.018 OPS off him.

“I think it’s just the trust to miss barrels,” catcher Ryan Jeffers said of what’s different with Bundy in the past two “You know, to trust that, ‘Hey, I can throw my stuff in the zone and get ahead of guys.’ Because when he was struggling, he was falling behind guys and then he has to throw something a little bit more in the middle of the zone.”

Bundy hasn’t faced Cleveland this year. All-Star Jose Ramirez is 2-for-11 off him with a double. The trade acquisition Leon is 4-for-13 with a double and homer against him.

The Twins may have found a new closer on hard-throwing rookie Jhoan Duran. His 4-seam fastball has averaged 100.6 mph, his curve has averaged 87.5 mph, and his splitter has averaged 96.2 mph, all the highest in baseball.

Why bet on the Cleveland Guardians?

This series marks the first set of five-or-more games between Cleveland and Minnesota since Sept. 13-15, 1985 at Municipal Stadium (also five). Since the start of 2020, 30 of the 38 games between these two teams have been decided by three runs-or-less and 19 have been decided by two runs-or-less.

Cleveland is down its No. 1 catcher for a while as Austin Hedges has landed on the seven-day concussion list. Depending on the severity, it could be a lot longer than a week. Hedges’ bat won’t be missed all that much as he was hitting just .160 with five homers, 15 RBIs and a .494 OPS.

Solid defender/pitch-framer, though. Luke Maile should take over as the primary catcher but the team also made a trade Tuesday in landing backstop Sandy Leon from Cincinnati. The 31-year-old hadn’t appeared in the majors this season but debuted for the Guardians on Tuesday.
