Why Bet on the Minnesota Vikings?
It was a relatively poor showing for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, as they failed to defend their home turf against the Tom Brady-less Tampa Bay Buccaneers and with Baker Mayfield leading the Bucs to an unlikely 20-17 road upset. Groans can be heard across Skol Nation as the Vikes pretty much proved why their superb 2022 campaign was a fluke once more.
On the bright side, the connection between Kirk Cousins (344 passing yards, two passing touchdowns) and Justin Jefferson (nine catches for 150 receiving yards) is still as prolific as ever. However, Minnesota only put up 41 rushing yards as a team, with last year’s backup Alexander Mattison rushing for merely 34 yards on 11 carries. Mattison did haul in a TD catch from Cousins, but he’s looked far from the backfield replacement of Dalvin Cook.
It was also a mixed bag of results for the Vikings’ defense, which held Tampa Bay to just 242 yards of total offense, albeit with young journeyman QB Baker Mayfield looking crisp under center for his new team with two passing scores and not a single turnover. This unit will face an even tougher challenge against the reigning NFC champs on Thursday night and head coach Kevin O’Connell needs to fix his team’s D right away.
Why Bet on the Philadelphia Eagles?
There was nothing flashy about the Philadelphia Eagles’ 25-20 victory on the road against the New England Patriots in Week 1. The defending NFC champions were put to the test against a stout Patriots defense, limiting the Eagles to just 251 yards on offense this past Sunday.
Nevertheless, Jalen Hurts and Co. kept their composure and hung on for the victory after taking a 16-point lead and holding New England’s offense scoreless by halftime. Then again, the Pats rallied back and finished with 382 all-purpose yards, with Mac Jones eclipsing the 300-yard passing mark. There will be growing pains for this revamped Eagles defensive unit, which saw a lot of its standouts depart following last season’s magical run to the Super Bowl.
Perhaps the even more erratic Vikings will aid Philly’s defensive woes this Thursday night. Last season, the Eagles blew out the Vikes, 24-7, to put an end to Minnesota’s streak of winning one-possession games at an unprecedented rate.
Vikings vs. Eagles Betting Trends
- The Vikings are 4-2 in the last six regular-season games on the road (3-2-1 ATS).
- Minnesota is also 4-2 in its last six meetings against Philadelphia since 2010 (SU/ATS).
- The totals went over in three of Minny’s last four regular-season road games.
- The Eagles are 9-2 in the last 11 home games, including the playoffs (8-3 ATS).
- Philadelphia has won five straight contests against teams from the NFC North (3-2 ATS).
- The totals went under in each of the last four games played in Philly.
Vikings vs. Eagles Expert Betting Predictions
Both of these NFC contenders should put together a highly entertaining matchup on TNF thanks to impressive passing games. However, we’re still worried about Kirk Cousins’ knack for buckling under the primetime pressure. The Eagles should come away with the victory when all is said and done, though the Vikings will likely lose by less than a touchdown to cover the relatively large spread as road dogs.
