By Carlos Chacon

Over the last five years, three of the NFL Coach of the Year Award recipients were in their respective teams’ first year. 2022 NFL Coach of the Year Favorites

Brian Daboll

  • 2022 NFL Coach of the Year Odds: +1,400

In terms of first-year head coaches, there’s no better Coach of the Year candidate in the field than Brian Daboll; the new man at the helm of the New York Giants organization. As a celebrated offensive coordinator in Buffalo, Daboll turned the Bills into a powerhouse offense and was instrumental to the development of Josh Allen as an elite quarterback.

Daboll’s next project is Daniel Jones, who has struggled under center in his first two seasons in the big leagues. if Jones sees a vast improvement and the G-Men finish as winners of the NFC East this upcoming season, this could very well mean an easy COTY win for the 47-year-old Canadian.

Brandon Staley

  • 2022 NFL Coach of the Year Odds: +1,400

Expectations are through the roof for the Chargers this season, which is one big reason why Brandon Staley is in the upper tier of Coach of the Year candidates. His team finished with a nine-win campaign In his first year coaching the Bolts last season and is well-respected for his crafty decision-making by media pundits.

As a defensive-minded guru under the coaching tree of former Coach of the Year awardee Sean McVay, Staley has now found the proper balance in his roster after the huge signing of stud edge rusher Khalil Mack this offseason to complement what’s already a potent Los Angeles offense. Staley’s campaign will be relatively tougher compared to his peers, though, as he has to deliver terrific results playing in the stacked AFC West division.

2022 NFL Coach of the Year Dark Horses

Kliff Kingsbury

  • 2022 NFL Coach of the Year Odds: +2,800

The jury is still out on whether or not Kliff Kingsbury deserves some praises for improving the Arizona Cardinals over the last three seasons. On one hand, the Cards have seen their win rate improve year on year, with last season’s 11-win campaign and playoff appearance being their first double-digit winning season since 2015. On the other, many experts claim that Kingsbury’s success has been fueled mainly by the phenomenal talent of quarterback Kyler Murray and not much else.

Kingsbury has also been criticized for buckling under pressure by the second half of the regular season, and that’s the one improvement that must be evident to strengthen his case for the Coach of the Year Award. Murray recently signed a contract extension after showing brief frustrations with the organization this offseason, with the continued and seemingly healthy relationship between the two men is enough reason for Kingsbury to be a solid sleeper candidate to win the award.

Mike Tomlin

  • 2022 NFL Coach of the Year Odds: +3,300

There’s an uphill battle ahead for long-time Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin, who’ll no longer have legendary Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger running the offense for the first time since beginning his head-coaching career in 2007. Throughout his 15-year tenure in Pittsburgh, the Steelers have not had a single losing record under Tomlin.

It’s quite fascinating that Tomlin is one of the more respected and consistent coaches in the NFL, but he has yet to win the NFL Coach of the Year award despite having two Super Bowl wins under his belt already. Given the task of finding a new starting quarterback in either Mitchell Trubisky or local college hero Kenny Pickett, Tomlin could very well win the one individual accolade that has alluded him for so long if either Trubisky or Pickett turns in a dazzling playoff-bound campaign for the Steelers in 2022.

2022 NFL Coach of the Year Huge Reach

Pete Carroll

  • 2022 NFL Coach of the Year Odds: +5,000

Similar to Tomlin, Seattle’s Pete Carroll has yet to win a Coach of the Year Award even after 12 spectacular seasons with the Seahawks to go with two trips to the Super Bowl and winning one of them. At the ripe old age of 70, though, Carroll’s window of chewing gum on the sidelines and motivating his squad with utmost passion is on borrowed time.

Not helping Carroll’s case this upcoming season is that the Seahawks are committed to a full rebuild after shipping the last two superstars during the Legion of Boom era in the form of Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner. We wouldn’t be surprised if Carroll delivers a respectable .500 record at the very least with such a depleted roster this season, but the odds are certainly not in his favor.
