2022 NFL Season Betting Tips

By Hank Blaine

The 2022 NFL Season kicks off on Sep. 8 when the Buffalo Bills head to SoFi Stadium to take on the Los Angeles Rams. Two months may seem like a long time, but it’s not. NFL handicappers must start preparing today. Check out 5 betting tips to put in your back pocket as you prepare for what promises to be a profitable 2022 NFL Season.

5 Betting Tips That Will Get You Ready for the 2022 NFL Season

Become an NFL team expert

By becoming an NFL expert for a specific team, you can save time handicapping games. Let’s say you decide to become a Dallas Cowboys expert. You do your homework and you realize that Dallas is an overlay to win their division. In addition to backing the Cowboys to win the NFC East, you circle every game this season, 8 total, where the Boys play one of their division rivals.

So even before the season started, you’ve handicapped 8 Dallas Cowboys games. You must still decide if injuries, game form, and other factors before backing the Cowboys. But that’s the beauty of becoming an expert.

It doesn’t mean you back the Cowboys to cover the spread in every game. It means you have the knowledge to know when Dallas is an overlay and when the Boys are an underlay.

If you like an underdog to win Super Bowl 57, bet before the season starts

Betting on a team before the season starts to win Super Bowl 57 can backfire for sure. If you like Tampa Bay, who offers around +800 to win the 2022 Super Bowl, and the Bucs lose their first two games, you missed out on higher odds.

But if you like an underdog, it’s almost impossible for you to get better odds once the season starts. Underdog teams that win the Super Bowl almost always start the season hot. Think about the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles who won the 2018 Super Bowl.

Philly offered +4000 odds before week 1. The Eagles started the season winning 3-of-4. By the end of the first month, Philadelphia’s Super Bowl odds had dropped in half. So if you like an underdog to win Super Bowl 57, back them before the season starts.

Decide on a manageable per bet against the spread unit

Most NFL handicappers already know how much they are going to bet on each game. If you don’t, make sure to do this before anything else. The key to make money betting on sports is to not chase. You won’t chase if you decide the only amount you are going to bet on any single game is $100.

So if you lose $100 on an early NFL Sunday game, you don’t chase by doubling your bet to $200 on an afternoon game. You definitely don’t double your $200 loss to $400 on the NFL Sunday Night game. Stick to your bet unit. Sometimes managing losses is the best you can do.

Create your own strength of schedule list and update after the NFL Preseason

Forget strength of schedules you find on the internet. Most NFL strength of schedules put a huge emphasis on what happened the season before. But the NFL Draft, coaching changes, retirements, and free agency can change a team. As an example, the New Orleans Saints lost their head coach, Sean Payton, to retirement.

But the Saints drafted a fantastic wide receiver in Chris Olave, signed Jarvis Landy to play the slot, and signed Tyrann Mathieu. New Orleans, who didn’t make the playoffs in 2021, is probably much better than any strength of schedule list implies.

Create a personal strength of schedule. Then update the strength of schedule after the NFL preseason. Doing so will help you spot overlays.
