2022 NFL Offseason Handicapping Guide

By Hank Blaine

One of the best ways to prepare for the NFL Regular Season is to handicap the offseason. By handicapping the offseason, we mean paying attention to how teams perform during NFL Preseason games. You mustn’t bet on NFL Preseason games. Paying attention to the games, though, is important. Check out the five things you should do during the NFL offseason to prepare for a profitable NFL Regular Season.

How to Handicap the 2022 NFL Offseason

Pay attention to how offensive lines perform

NFL games are won or lost in the trenches. In particular, games are won or lost depending on how well a team’s offensive line plays. The reason the Bengals lost Super Bowl 56 is because Cincinnati’s offensive line couldn’t protect Joe Burrow. Eventually, the Rams’ D-line got to Burrow. Joe did the best he could, but it wasn’t enough.

We want to back teams with excellent offensive lines, units that give their quarterbacks time and open rushing lanes for running backs. An offensive line handicapping strategy can lead to more winning picks than any other angle.

Look for impact rookies on both sides of the ball

Impact rookies can make a huge difference. This season’s most important impact rookie on the offensive side of the ball should be New York Jets’ running back Breece Hall. If Hall turns out to be everything NFL experts believe he will be, the Jets’ will surprise against the spread.

On defense, Aidan Hutchinson at Detroit, Jaguars’ linebacker Travon Walker, and Giants’ first round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux should have an impact. When it comes to NYG, don’t just pay attention to how Thibodeaux performs in preseason games. Also pay attention to how offensive lineman Evan Neal performs.

The Giants should offer value on the spread and to win straight up in plenty of games this season. It could take about six weeks for oddsmakers to adjust. So in the Giants’ first six games, we might find nice overlays.

Study new NFL head coaches

The Giants have a new head coach in Brian Daboll. If Daboll appears to have his team under control, NYG could be a good team to back to cover versus their more high-profile opponents. Doug Pederson is the Jaguars’ new coach. Pederson coached the Eagles to a Super Bowl win. If Pederson appears fully committed during the preseason, the Jags could be a surprise team.

Think of division opponents

When you sit down and handicap futures, think of division opponents. Two teams that offer low odds to win the Super Bowl but might not even win their division are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New Orleans has beaten Tampa in four straight regular season games. The Saints have improved big time since the end of last season. Every team in KC’s division, the AFC West, can take the title. The Broncos, Chargers, and Raiders are playoff contenders.

So before dumping on Buccaneers’ or Chiefs’ future options assess both team’s chances of winning their division.

Consider which QB and WR combos will improve the most

Bengals’ star quarterback Joe Burrow had a great connection with Ja’Marr Chase last season. 2021 was Chase’s rookie year. So will the combo be even more effective in 2022?

How will Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb in Dallas perform together now that wide receiver Amari Cooper is no longer with the team? Will Derek Carr and Davante Adams hit the ground running in Vegas? Or will it take a few games for the QB-WR combination to become a force?

Consider which NFL quarterback to wide receiver combinations should improve the most this season. It will help you find overlay NFL bets and stay away from underlay NFL wagers.
