2022 Honda Classic Recap
Sepp Straka shot a 71-64-69-66 on his way to a -10 and a 1-shot victory Shane Lowry. Shane finished alone in second at -9.
Third place went to Kurt Kitayama at -8. Daniel Berger finished a lone fourth at -7. There was a two-way tie in fifth. Both Alex Noren and Gary Woodland finished at -4. Two players also finished tied sixth. Chris Kirk and Mattias Schwab finished at -3.
2023 Honda Classic Top Pick
Shane Lowry missed the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open but he followed up the missed cut with a nice performance at the Genesis Invitational.
At last week’s Genesis, Lowry shot a 69-69-71-68 on his way to a -7 and tied fourteenth. This week, Lowry heads to a golf course he had great success playing over last year.
If Shane comes close to his 2022 performance at The Honda Classic, he should play in the final pairing on Sunday. That could lead to a trophy victory.
2023 Honda Classic Second Pick
Chris Kirk’s 2023 form hasn’t been fantastic. Chris missed the cut at the Shriner’s Children’s Open, the RSM Classic, and the WM Phoenix Open.
But although Kirk has missed the cut in 3-of-9 tournaments played, he warrants a serious look to win The Honda Classic. First, after he missed the cut at the RSM Classic, Chris bounced back with a third place finish at the Sony Open.
He hasn’t played since missing the cut at the Phoenix Open. So if history repeats itself, he’ll have a shot to win this on Sunday.
Second, Kirk followed up the third at the Sony with a tied third at The American Express. So if we throw out the Phoenix Open, the second choice is playing well enough to win.
2023 Honda Classic Third Pick
Can Sung-jae Im win the 2023 The Honda Classic? Sure he can. But Sung-jae missed the cut at the 2022 The Honda Classic.
Also, the form is just okay. Again, Im can take this. But at +800, you have to really believe he’s the best player on the entry list before backing.
2023 Honda Classic Underdog Pick
Last year’s The Honda Classic winner bounced back from a 71 first round to outlast Lowry by a stroke. If Sepp Straka is as determined this week as he was last week, he should out play his odds.
The reason Straka offers such huge odds is because he’s missed the cut in 5-of-11 tournaments played. However, players like Sepp tend to turn it on when they step onto familiar courses. Don’t be surprised if Straka plays his best so far this season.
