In last season’s BYU versus Baylor throw down, the Bears blasted the Cougars 38-24. This season, Baylor must travel to BYU. Will the Bears prove they’re the better squad? Why Bet on the Baylor Bears?

For Baylor this season, everything starts with quarterback Blake Shapen. Last season, Shapen took over the starting position towards the end of the regular season. Shapen played great in Baylor’s Sugar Bowl upset win over Ole Miss.

In his first game this season, Shapen played great again. Blake completed 85% of his passes for 214 yards and a couple of TDs in Baylor’s 69-10 win over Albany.

Shapen has yet to throw a pick during his Baylor career. He’s thrown for a combined 7 TDs in 106 total attempts. The Bears rushed for 259 yards against Albany. Last season, Baylor averaged 215.9 rushing yards per game.

In 2021, the Bears defense was one of the better units in the Big 12. Baylor allowed 350 yards per game on average. Opponents scored less than 20 points per game versus the Bears.

Against Albany, Baylor’s defense played great. The Great Danes scored 10 points from 237 total yards. Baylor allowed Albany to rush for 87 yards.

Why Bet on the BYU Cougars?

In NCAAF Week 1, BYU’s offense impressed as much as Baylor’s. In a lot of ways, the Cougars were more impressive because BYU beat AAC team South Florida on the road. The Cougars scored 50 in the 50-21 win. BYU rushed for 315 yards while quarterback Jaren Hall completed 25-of-32 for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns.

RB Cristopher Brooks carried the rushing load. Brooks rumbled for 135 yards from 13 carries, averaging 10.4 yards per carry. Brooks scored a rushing TD.

The Cougars gave up 21 points to a bad team, but we should put the points total in perspective. Before South Florida scored their first touchdown, BYU had built a 38-0 lead.

The Cougars had already put the game away before the second half ended, which means BYU fell into a more prevent defense before halftime. Of course South Florida was going to score some points given the fact BYU had changed their strategy on defense and had already begun to pull their starters.

Baylor vs. BYU Expert Betting Predictions

BYU hosting Baylor should be one of college football week 2’s most competitive games. BYU is a solid football team. So is Baylor. Both have a shot to secure a top bowl bid this season.

The difference between the two comes down to the point spread. This is so close that it’s difficult to see either team winning by more than 3 points, which means the hook in this game, the half a point, could be huge.

Blake Shapen doesn’t make mistakes. So Baylor will score with the Cougars. Both defenses are terrific and both head coaches, Dave Aranda for Baylor and Kalani Sitake for BYU, will make the right calls.

Because Baylor gets a half a point, the Bears are the pick. BYU can win this game, but -3.5 makes Baylor the play against the spread.
