Get in the Carr, Colin

About two weeks have passed since Colin Kaepernick impressed the Las Vegas Raiders franchise with his workout in Sin City. It’s the first time that the now-34-year-old quarterback has paid an official visit to an NFL team since 2017. Kaepernick was famously exiled by the league after he was seen kneeling on the sidelines during the National Anthem as peaceful protest against police brutality back in 2016.

The Raiders, who are (+3,500) sleepers to win Super Bowl 57, sure could use some depth behind starting quarterback Derek Carr following the departure of incumbent backup, Marcus Mariota, to the Atlanta Falcons earlier this offseason.

Kapernick received praise from none other than Carr himself, with the Raiders’ franchise player stating that he and Kaepernick would “get along great”. Right now, Vegas has Nick Mullens and Jarrett Stidham as the team’s backup QB on the depth chart. Kaepernick still owns the NFL’s best single-game rushing record for a quarterback, running for 181 yards to go with two touchdowns in the 49ers’ playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers in the 2012 NFC Divisional Round.

No Salary Kap Issues Whatsoever

As of this writing, the Raiders are a little over $7 million over the cap, which means they’ll need some deft maneuvering with the payroll before they finalize their 53-man roster for the 2022 NFL regular season. A huge chunk of their budget went to the offseason signing of former star Packers wideout Davante Adams, who’s a huge upgrade for Vegas’ passing game, to say the least.

That being said, Kaepernick is a low-risk, high-reward signing talent-wise should he make the Raiders’ final cut this offseason. Kaepernick will likely be available to sign for the veteran minimum whilst also giving the franchise added publicity for better or worse. Obviously, Kaepernick’s detractors will be opposed to the move regardless of the Raiders’ final decision, but enough time has already passed that the former NFC Championship Game-winning QB will likely be welcomed back with open arms, at least by his fellow NFL players.

For Kaepernick, meanwhile, playing in the same state as his college alma mater is just another bonus to his highly-anticipated return. He’s had some experience playing against Carr back in their formative years, with Kaepernick at the helm of college football’s Western Athletic Conference over in Nevada and with Carr running the show in Fresno State.
