Packers vs. Cardinals 2021 NFL Week 8 Odds, Analysis and Prediction

By Hank Blaine

A spectacular Thursday night matchup to kick off NFL Week 8 between the one-loss Green Bay Packers and unbeaten Arizona Cardinals – the only unbeaten team in the NFL – has somewhat been dampened by a few big-name stars being ruled out.

Green Bay is 44-24-4 all-time against the Cardinals franchise dating back to when it was in Chicago. Arizona has won the last three meetings, including postseason, but they haven’t played since December 2018 when the Cards won 20-17 at Lambeau Field. Aaron Rodgers has only lost 4 consecutive games vs one franchise once in career. The Packers and Cardinals have combined for a 13-1 record and a winning percentage of .929 – it’s the best combined win percentage for a Thursday game in October or later in the Super Bowl era (since 1966).

Why Bet on the Green Bay Packers?

It’s the fourth time the Packers and their opponent entered a game on winning streaks of six-plus games in the same season and first since 2015 vs. Denver. Green Bay is looking for its first win at the Cardinals since 2009. This is the first prime-time regular-season game between the two teams. The Packers have won nine straight prime-time games, going 8-1 ATS. Rodgers is looking to become the fifth QB to win 10 straight prime-time starts. The last time the Packers played an undefeated team with seven-plus wins was Oct. 28, 2018, at the 7-0 Los Angeles Rams.

Green Bay’s Davante Adams, the NFL’s best receiver, will not play as he’s in the COVID protocols, as are fellow receiver Allen Lazard and defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Adams leads the Packers in catches (52) and receiving yards (744). He is tied for second in the NFL in catches and alone in third in yards among all receivers. That news jumped this line up a few points.

Unbelievably, Rodgers is 6-0 in his past six games without Adams since the start of the 2019 season, two last year and four in 2019. Rodgers has 17 touchdowns and one interception in those six games.

“I think that’s a great testament to the other players we have on this football team, being able to go out and do their job at a high level and go out there and execute,” Coach Matt LaFleur said.

The Packers have won five of the last seven games they have played on a Thursday night. In the last six games he has played on a Thursday night, Rodgers has thrown for 16 TDs and one INT with a passer rating of 113.6.

Unless Marquez Valdes-Scantling can come off injured reserve — he’s missed the last four games with a hamstring injury, but there’s hope he can return this week – early Thursday, and he might, the Packers could be without their top three wideouts. Pro Bowl left tackle David Bakhtiari (ACL) will not be activated in time to play against the Cardinals. Bakhtiari was Pro Football Focus’ top-graded pass blocker in 2020 but has yet to play this season recovering from a torn ACL.

Why Bet on the Arizona Cardinals?

As for the Cardinals, they have started 7-0 for the second time, also doing so in 1974 when in St. Louis. The Cardinals have never won their first eight games. they will be without future Hall of Fame defensive end JJ Watt due to injury. Watt was ruled out by the team on Wednesday because of a shoulder injury. He has 16 tackles, 10 quarterback hits, a sack, and a forced fumble in his first seven games with the Cardinals.

Arizona star wideout DeAndre Hopkins is questionable after missing practice all week. Hopkins has been a regular on the injury report this season, but has not missed a game so expect him to play.
