Terry McLaurin’s Washington Commanders Contract Extension

By Carlos Chacon

Recent reports have stated that Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin will be skipping his team’s minicamp as he seeks a contract extension from the Commanders. Washington drafted McLaurin in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft and has played like a superstar by far. And with the 26-year-old on the final year of his rookie contract coupled with the recent deals being made across the league this offseason, it’s time for the Commanders to lock in their best receiving threat.

Nitrobetting is ready to equip its bettors with the latest news, futures odds, and special features for the duration of the 2022 NFL offseason. This time, let’s cite three reasons why top wide receiver Terry McLaurin deserves a big contract extension from the Washington Commanders, as well as Washington’s latest odds to win Super Bowl LII.

Three Reasons Why the Commanders Should Give Terry McLaurin A Contract Extension

Scary Terry Makes Opposing Defenses Weary

There’s no denying that Washington’s passing game will be in shambles without McLaurin. The Ohio State product secured back-to-back seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards and even saw his average yards per catch see an uptick from 12.9 YPC in 2020 to 13.7 YPC last season.

McLaurin’s also been relatively healthy in his young career having missed just three regular-season games across his first three NFL seasons. And when compared to Washington’s supposed No. 2 option in Curtis Samuel (five games played in 2021 with six catches for 27 yards), McLaurin’s unparalleled value to the team is made even more apparent.

Commanders Need All the Help They Can Get

As of this writing, the Commanders are (+6,600) long shots to win Super Bowl 57. And while they have a fighting chance with (+500) odds to win the NFC East crown, they’re still ways behind the likes of the Dallas Cowboys (+115) and the Philadelphia Eagles (+180) in terms of actually competing for the division title.

That being said, securing McLaurin to a long-term deal will only help Washington’s chances of returning to NFL relevancy. Since 2007, the Commanders have only made the playoffs four times and were eliminated in the very first round in all four trips. McLaurin was a part of their most-recent postseason trip in 2020 (with a mediocre 7-9 regular-season record, by the way) and should have plenty more opportunities for playoff runs in the future if the Commanders commit to the sure-handed receiver.

Wideouts Come At A Premium in the Free Market

The Commanders have to be reading the room their in this 2022 NFL offseason, with elite wide receivers such as Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, Cooper Kupp, and Stefon Diggs getting signed to record deals this offseason regardless if it’s with a new team or with their current one. In turn, coming to a deal with McLaurin sooner than later will relieve Washington of one less headache.

Other wideouts on the final year of their rookie contract such as Deebo Samuel of the 49ers and D.K. Metcalf of the Seahawks have also demanded extensions with their respective teams, with Metcalf also holding out on Seattle’s minicamp similar to McLaurin. The Commanders organization as a whole is seen as dysfunctional as they come, but they could redeem themselves and pull their fans a solid by extending McLaurin to a contract that’s worthy of his evident talent.
