Understanding the Mindset of Successful Gamblers

By Hank Blaine

There are various forms of gambling. Some gamblers are casino players, others sports bettors, and still others head to their local track and throw money behind racehorses. But although a gambler can bet on casino games, sports, or the ponies, all successful gamblers have certain things in common. The most successful gamblers possess mindset attributes that lead to profit.

Mindset Attributes All Successful Gambler Have in Common

Consistency without complacency

Being consistent is important. By adding the word complacency, we mean that although all gamblers must be consistent, they can never be complacent.

Complacency means settling. There is no such thing as a turn switch system to sports betting. Wins and losses go in waves. Sometimes, we win six in a row. Sometimes, we lose 4 in a row.

That’s the nature of all gambling. So the most successful gamblers know that if they hit a losing streak, they may want to rethink their consistent processes, whether they be handicapping processes or deciding on their bet unit process.

The ability to let go of the past

Letting go of the past leads to success for human beings no matter the profession, not just gamblers. Dwelling on the past is a waste of time and physical and mental energy. If our brains are tired, so are our minds.

If our minds are tired, if we’re constantly thinking about how the Starbucks barrister was so stupid for messing up our order and how we shouldn’t have paid for our ice latte, our bodies become physically tired.

The brain and body work hand in hand. The best way to conserve enough energy to make smart bets is to let go of the past.

Also, if we don’t let go of the past, if we don’t forget bad bets as an example, we end up chasing. Chasing bad bets is the best way to diminish a bankroll.

Reevaluate without fear

By the statement reevaluate without fear, we mean human beings have a tendency to never change their processes or mindsets because of fear. We may think or say we aren’t changing things up because our way of doing things works.

Sometimes, that might be true. More than likely, though, we’re afraid of change. If you’re a gambler, you cannot be afraid of change. Always be on the lookout for opportunities. Never be afraid to change out of fear. Doing so will open doors to more profit.

An understanding that, yes, it’s all about the money

This mindset is extremely important. Mastering this mindset will ensure you don’t lose your rent money.

At the end of the day, gambling is about the money. We can call it other things, entertainment, a sports handicapping skill, etc., but if we lose more than we win, we’re losing money that we could have used to invest in the stock market or buy a new pair of shoes.

The point is, all gambling is about the money. The most successful gamblers know this, which is why if they gamble a lot, they always look for value. There are more craps players than casino players because the house edge in craps is lower than American roulette.

There are more NFL and college football professional bettors than baseball handicappers because spread lines constitute value. When oddsmakers screw up a football line, pro handicappers pounce.

Our mindset must be that we are in the money game. We can’t allow our feelings to distract us from making smart bets. We must leave emotion out of it. Even if we’re the most die hard Green Bay Packers fan, we must forget we are and back the Packers’ opponent on that Sunday if the opponent offers value.
