2021 College Football Week 9 Preview, Odds and Picks

By Hank Blaine

A couple of massive Big Ten games happen on Saturday. The first pits #6 Michigan versus #8 Michigan State. Both teams head into their yearly rivalry contest undefeated. The winner will have the inside track to the Big Ten title game and a possible College Football Playoff spot. The second monster game in the Big Ten has #5 Ohio State hosting #20 Penn State. Because the Nittany Lions have two losses, they won’t make it to the CFP. But Penn State could still garner a New Year’s Day Bowl bid, so the Lions will play hard. Keep reading for odds and analysis for this week’s top college football picks.

Troy Trojans at #24 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Coastal’s loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers ended the Chanticleers’ dream of playing in a New Year Day Bowl. The dream was a long shot. So losing doesn’t destroy Coastal’s season. The Chanticleers are 5-2 ATS and 4-0 ATS at home. Troy is 1-3 ATS on the road. Costal Carolina rolls.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Texas Longhorns at #16 Baylor Bears

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 12:00pm ET
  • Where: McLane Stadium, Waco, Texas
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Baylor Bears -3

The wheels have fallen off in Austin. After starting the season with so much promise, Steve Sarkisian’s bunch has fallen to 4-3. The Horns must win out to have any shot of grabbing a New Year’s Day Bowl.

But another loss, probably by a wide margin, appears in the cards for this Saturday. Baylor is one of the better teams in college football. Quarterback Gerry Bohanon has a 12-1 TD-to-INT ratio. The Bears are for real, which is why they’re close to a lock to cover the 3.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Baylor Bears

#6 Michigan Wolverines at #8 Michigan State Spartans

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 12:00pm ET
  • Where: Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, Michigan
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Michigan Wolverines -4

Did you ever think you’d see Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines a favorite over the Spartans in a game taking place in East Lansing? Both teams have played excellent football this season. But it’s difficult, impossible really, to back Harbaugh’s bunch against Sparty on the road. These two teams are so similar that home field should mean something. The Wolverines should be no more than a 1-point favorite.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Michigan State Spartans

#9 Iowa Hawkeyes at Wisconsin Badgers

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 12:00pm ET
  • Where: Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, Wisconsin
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Wisconsin Badgers -3.5

Yes, Purdue upset Iowa in the Hawkeyes last, and that was unexpected, but it doesn’t mean Iowa isn’t a better team than Wisconsin. The Badgers dominated Purdue in their last, but the Boilermakers battled Wisconsin a week after the upset win against the Hawkeyes. Iowa is better than Wisconsin. The Badgers lose another while the Hawkeyes get back on track for a New Year’s Day Bowl.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Iowa Hawkeyes

Miami Hurricanes at #17 Pittsburgh Panthers

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 12:00pm ET
  • Where: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Pittsburgh Panthers -12

Panthers’ quarterback Kenny Pickett has thrown 23 TDs to a single pick. He’s also thrown for 2,236 yards when completing 69% of his passes. Pickett should lead Pitt to at least a 17 point victory over Miami. Pittsburgh averages over 45 points per game. So a 20-point to 30-point win isn’t out of the question.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers

#12 Kentucky Wildcats at Mississippi State Bulldogs

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 12:00pm ET
  • Where: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Kentucky Wildcats pk

Panthers’ quarterback Kenny Pickett has thrown 23 TDs to a single pick. He’s also thrown for 2,236 yards when completing 69% of his passes. Pickett should lead Pitt to at least a 17 point victory over Miami. Pittsburgh averages over 45 points per game. So a 20-point to 30-point win isn’t out of the question.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Kentucky Wildcats

#20 Penn State Nittany Lions at #5 Ohio State Buckeyes

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 7:30pm ET
  • Where: Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Ohio State Buckeyes -16.5

Based on Penn State’s Week 8 performance, the Ohio State Buckeyes should roll. The loss to Illinois ended the Nittany Lions CPF chances, yes, but Penn State may have been looking forward to this match up. The thing to worry about is how playing a 9 OT game will affect Penn State’s ability to keep up with the Buckeyes. The thing to worry about if you’re an Ohio State fan is that OSU has averaged close to 50 points per versus bad teams and on Saturday plays a squad that allows just 14.7 points each game. Even though they will land in Columbus a tired bunch, the point spread makes the Lions an overlay. Penn State is the play.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Penn State Nittany Lions

Washington State Cougars at Arizona State Sun Devils

  • When: Saturday, October 30th, 7:30pm ET
  • Where: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Arizona
  • 2021 College Football Week 9 Odds: Arizona State Sun Devils -14

Utah handed ASU their lunch in the Sun Devils last, which is one of the reasons the spread isn’t larger than 14 points. The Sun Devils are a great bounce back team. The last time Arizona State lost straight up they rolled to three straight SU and ATS victories. ASU will put a pasting onto a Washington State squad without their head coach. The Cougars allow 25.4 points per game. So expect a blowout Sun Devils’ win.

2021 College Football Week 9 Pick: Arizona State Sun Devils
