2021 NFL Week 12 Preview, Odds and Picks

By Hank Blaine

Expect a plenty more close games in Week 12 of this NFL season, especially with no team favored by more than 7.5 points. So far this season, a game-winning score in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime has decided 37 contests, the third-most such games through Week 11 all-time. Only 2015 (39) and 2003 (39) had more. Here’s a look at two marquee matchups on Sunday with picks. Be sure to check out for the latest NFL odds at our online Bitcoin sportsbook.

Tennessee Titans vs. New England Patriots

  • 2021 NFL Week 12 Odds: New England Patriots -7

It’s a 1 PM ET kickoff on CBS. This could be an AFC Championship Game preview and definitely play a part in deciding which club earns the top seed in the conference.

Bill Belichick is obviously the greatest NFL coach in history, but he’s 0-2 against the Titans’ Mike Vrabel all-time. Vrabel who signed as a free agent with the Patriots in 2001 and helped the team win three Super Bowls in his eight seasons as a New England player, led Tennessee to wins over New England in 2018 and again in the Wild Card round of the 2019 playoffs. Both wins were on the road.

The 2021 Patriots enter on a five-game winning streak and their defense, which leads the NFL in points per game allowed at 16.1, has allowed zero points over its opponents’ last 19 possessions. The last NFL team to hold an opponent scoreless over a stretch of at least 19 possessions was the Patriots (24 straight drives) in 2019.

The Patriots lead the NFL with 18 interceptions in 2021. The Patriots have returned three interceptions for a touchdown this season, tied with Dallas for the most in the NFL in 2021. Last week, the Patriots shutout the Falcons 25-0. The Patriots have not achieved back-to-back shutout wins since 1982, with a 3-0 win vs. Miami on Dec. 12 followed by a 16-0 win at Seattle on Dec. 19.

New England’s Mac Jones is bidding to become the first rookie quarterback to lead his team to the playoffs since Dak Prescott in 2016. Last week in a win over Atlanta, Jones became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to complete at least 80 percent of his passes in consecutive games (minimum 15 attempts). Jones leads all rookies in completions (245), completion percentage (70.2), passing yards (2,540), touchdown passes (14) and passer rating (94.7). The Titans secondary has struggled this season, ranking 24th in passing yards allowed with 253.3 yards per game.

New England leads the overall regular season and postseason series, 25-18-1. The Patriots are 18-7-1 in homes games against the Titans, including 5-1 at Gillette Stadium with the only loss coming in the 2019 playoff game.

The Pats are 5-0 ATS in their past five overall. We like them here but only under seven points.

NFL Week 12 Pick: Patriots

Los Angeles Rams vs. Green Bay Packers

  • 2021 NFL Week 12 Odds: LA Rams -1

It’s a 4:25 PM ET kickoff on Fox and probably the most important game remaining the NFC this regular season as this may decide the No. 1 overall seed in the conference – although the Arizona Cardinals will definitely play a role in that as well.

Green Bay has won five of the last six regular-season matchups with the Rams and 12 of the last 17. Including the postseason, the Packers have won each of the last three home games against the Rams, outscoring them 80-31.

The teams played at Lambeau in the Divisional Round back in January and the Packers rolled 32-18. Aaron Rodgers threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams and a game-clinching 58-yarder to Allen Lazard with 6:52 left. Rodgers also had a 1-yard touchdown run, the first by a Packers quarterback in a playoff game at Lambeau Field since Bart Starr’s winning sneak in the Ice Bowl against Dallas on Dec. 31, 1967. The Rams’ QB then was Jared Goff and it would be his last game in an LA uniform as he was traded this offseason to the Lions for Matthew Stafford.

The Packers are one game away from the bye week and with a 8-3 record heading into Week 12, have secured a winning record at the bye for the eighth straight season (4-0 in 2020, 8-2 in 2019, 3-2-1 in 2018, 4-3 in 2017, 2-1 in 2016, 6-0 in 2015, 5-3 in 2014). The Packers have won the game heading into the bye week in five of the last six years.

The Rams come out of their bye week on a two-game losing streak. Coach Sean McVay’s Rams are 3-1 coming out of the bye week. A Rams victory will improve their record to 6-2 against NFC opponents this season. McVay is 16-6 in games following a loss since he took over the position. The Rams have only lost three games in a row once (2019) since McVay took over. McVay is 3-1 in games following back-to-back losses.

Los Angeles is 0-4 ATS in its past four games.
