Odds Favorites to Win the 2021 Oscars

Best Picture

  • Nomadland -769
  • The Trial of the Chicago 7 +800
  • Minari +900
  • Promising Young Woman +900
  • Judas and the Black Messiah +2000
  • Mank +2200
  • Sound of Metal +6600
  • The Father +6600

Nomadland is the favorite heading into this category. It won for Best Picture – Drama in this year’s Golden Globes. The technical work done by director Chloé Zhao in this cross country story is one to praise in these moments of digitally focused viewing. Other movies like The Trial of the Chicago 7, Minari and Promising Young Woman have gained more exposure since they got wins in other events such as BAFTA, Golden Globes and the SAG Awards.

Best Director

  • Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) -3333
  • David Fincher (Mank) +1000
  • Lee Isaac (Minari) +1600
  • Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) +1800
  • Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round) +2800

Sometimes the Best Picture doesn’t guarantee the Best Director, but this is one of those special cases. The film very human and beautifully cinematic. If Chloe Zhao wins in this category, she would become the second female to win an Oscar (after Kathryn Bigelow in 2010), and the first Asian woman to win as Best Director. It’s pretty much a no brainer for this one.

Best Actor

  • Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) -2000
  • Anthony Hopkins (The Father) +700
  • Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) +1400
  • Gary Oldman (Mank) +3300
  • Steven Yeun (Minari) +3300

There’s no doubt who will take the trophy, even if he’s not here with us anymore and rightfully so. But don’t confuse Chadwick Boseman’s passing as an extra push for him. His performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was superb. It was well driven performance for his last acting roll. More than deserving for the posthumous actor.

Best Actress

  • Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) +129
  • Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) +200
  • Frances McDormand (Nomadland) +350
  • Andra Day (The United States of Billie Holiday) +550
  • Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) +1600

This category is too close to call. But putting factors into consideration, such as Frances McDormand is the one who recently won an Oscar in 2018, might not get it this time around. That doesn’t mean she can’t will win it. Her performance was a challenging one in Nomadland. But it seems Carey Mulligan has been gaining some attention. Her performance as someone seeking vengeance for sexual assault was a tough role, but memorable. Keep an eye on Viola Davis too, as she might win another Oscar after her amazing performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) -2500
  • Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7) +1000
  • Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami) +1400
  • Paul Raci (Sound of Metal) +1600
  • LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah) +2800

Many say that Paul Raci’s performance is a true supporting performance. But many question why Daniel Kaluuya wasn’t placed in the Best Actor category. Putting that aside, his performance as Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton gave us a more vulnerable personification of this historic figure. So, it’s likely he will take it. Though, LaKeith Stanfield also made a performance as Fred Hampton as well. It might get into a tie, but Kaluuya might take the trophy.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari) -455
  • Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Movie Film) +450
  • Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) +1200
  • Amanda Seyfried (Mank) +1600
  • Olivia Coleman (The Father) +1600

Her performance in Minari has given Yuh-Jung Youn a lot exposure, thus winning other awards such as the SAG. Although many have praised Amanda Seyfried’s performance in Mank, the boom that she was having as fallen a bit. Plus, the fact to become the first Korean actor to win the Academy Awards is something to weight in on.
