2022 Austrian Grand Prix Sleeper Picks

By Carlos Chacon

The 2022 British Grand Prix is arguably the best race of the season so far. After the action-packed race that saw Carlos Sainz score his first career victory, we move on to the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix for the second event of a back-to-back race weekend.

Max Verstappen finished with a rather disappointing P7 in Silverstone. He picked up debris from the opening lap crash, which caused floor damage to his car. The championship leader did not have enough downforce to keep up with the race leaders, but he had enough pace to stay in the points.

However, the most memorable segment of the race happened towards the closing stages. The five-car train involving Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Lando Norris had everyone on the edge of their seats. The script meant corrected winning chances for other drivers. With that, Nitrobetting looks into the best sleeper picks for the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.

George Russell

  • 2022 Austrian Grand Prix Odds: +1600

Mr. Consistency ended his P5 or better run last weekend after making opening lap contact with Pierre Gasly before Turn 1. Zhou Guanyu was among the victims of the incident, as well as Alex Albon. Nevertheless, his nine-race run remains impressive.

The 24-year-old is having an amazing first year with Mercedes and will be desperate to bounce back in Austria. If his previous results are anything to go by, there’s reason to believe he can work his way up the pack this weekend. His early exit at Silverstone, while a solid drive by Lewis Hamilton makes Russell eager to deliver sounder results.

George Russell outperformed his teammate, seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, in seven races this year. If he can produce better results with a bit of luck on his side, we expect the British driver to record his maiden Formula 1 victory.

Lando Norris

  • 2022 Austrian Grand Prix Odds: +12000

Norris delivered decent results in his home race, closing the stint with a P6 finish. He was pleased to score points at Silverston, but, the Englishman felt that the team could have employed a different strategy.

The McLaren driver qualified sixth in Silverstone and finished the race in the same position. He mentioned that he could have scored a P5 if not for the timing of his last pit stop. Norris was well ahead of Alpine’s Fernando Alonso when he made his last stop on Lap 34, but five laps later a mechanical problem by Esteban Ocon called out the Safety Car. This allowed Alonso to enter the pits for a free stop that brought him ahead of Norris.

Securing a top-ten finish at the British Grand Prix lifts up the spirits of Norris and his team, which could translate well into the Red Bull Ring this weekend. If McLaren finds more pace in the straights and a revised pit stop strategy, we might just see Norris claim a podium finish for a second time this season.

Fernando Alonso

  • 2022 Austrian Grand Prix Odds: +16400

Never count out the years of experience Fernando Alonso has behind him. We’ve seen the veteran Spaniard dish out striking results. The Alpine driver worked his way up to a P10 or better finish seven times this season, including a season-best P2 in qualification at Canada.

We expect the two-time World Champion to have a shot at a podium finish this season. It looks like Alpine is on the right track in terms of car development. Of course, the team packs talent with the duo of Alonso and Ocon in the seat. Watching him fight for a podium finish at Silverstone last weekend leads us to believe that his odds will present good sleeper value from here onward.
