2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Recap

Last week, F1 drivers and crews raced in Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijan GP has become one of the most intriguing events on the Formula One schedule. This year was no different as Charles Leclerc laid down the gauntlet during qualifying when the Ferrari driver grabbed the pole. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, both Red Bull drivers, started second and third. Carlos Sainz, Leclerc’s team member started fourth.

Red Bull made a statement. Verstappen crossed the finish line first and Perez finished second. Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished third and fourth. Both Ferrari drivers had to retire. Leclerc suffered a power unit issue. Sainz drove off the track due to a hydraulics problem.

2022 Canadian Grand Prix Picks

Top Pick to Win the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix

Who knows what may have happened if Charles Leclerc hadn’t suffered the power unit issue? Ferrari’s top driver won the pole. So the car was fine leading up to the race. Leclerc hasn’t crossed the finish line first since the Australian Grand Prix in early April.

Since taking the checkered flag in that race, he finished sixth at the Emilia Romagna, second at the Miami Grand Prix, and had to retire at the Spanish GP. But the pole win in Azerbaijan is a sign Leclerc and Ferrari are about to turn things around. Leclerc is the top pick.

Second Pick to Win the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix

The 2021 F1 Drivers champ has dominated in the past few weeks. Max Verstappen has won 5-of-8 overall and 4 of the last 5. Max’s victories include taking the checkered flag in Saudi Arabia, Italy, Miami, Spain, and last week, Azerbaijan. The odds are fair. So if Verstappen is still at -120 to win, he’s worth playing if you believe he continues to blow away his rivals.

Third Pick to Win the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix

No doubt, Verstappen teammate Sergio Perez can win this. Perez stepped to the podium first at the Monaco GP and finished second at Azerbaijan. But although Perez can win, the odds on Sergio make him unplayable. At +1400, Sainz is more than playable if you think he can take the checkered flag. Sainz finished second behind Perez in Monaco. So if we throw out the Azerbaijan race, Carlos Sainz should be right there to challenge for the win.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix

At +3300, George Russell worth a look. Russell started fifth at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He moved his way up to third. Mercedes should soon win a race. It could happen on Sunday. If it does, and you’re an underdog player, you will kick yourself for not putting a few bucks on Russell. Yes, Lewis Hamilton can win and he offers the same odds. But it feels like Mercedes wants Russell to be their top driver. So between the two, Russell is the better play.
