Super Wildcard Weekend is the time to back underdogs on the moneyline

After Monday night’s Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Rams game, the playoff field will go from 12 teams to 6. By next week, finding moneyline dogs with a shot could be nonexistent. So if you’re a moneyline underdog player, this weekend is the time to take a few shots. Based on initial handicapping, the Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals all have decent chances to upset their home favorite opponents.

The Cards play the Rams, a team they beat already this season. The Patriots take on the Bills, whom they beat in Buffalo earlier in the season. San Francisco is healthy enough on defense to contain Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense. Joe Burrow should dominate the Raiders’ secondary. But if Burrow isn’t one-hundred percent from the knee injury he suffered a couple of weeks ago, who knows? The Raiders could be a decent ML play.

Go with your gut

If you feel strong about something, go for it. Don’t worry about what everyone else is saying. If you think Bill Belichick comes up with the perfect game plan for the Patriots to beat the Bills, back New England against Buffalo. If you don’t think Philadelphia has any shot against the Buccaneers, lay the points. Don’t let so-called experts talk you off a play because they’ve gone the opposite way. Always trust your instincts.

When in doubt, take the points

Playoff football favors the team getting points. Tampa covered in 3-of-4 playoff games last year, but the Bucs were the favorite in just a single one of those games, their first versus the WFT.

The AFC winning Kansas City Chiefs covered against the Bills in the AFC Championship. But KC lost the Super Bowl outright as a -3 favorite. Kansas City also didn’t cover in their divisional round win versus the Cleveland Browns. If you’re stuck but want action on a wild card game, or any NFL Playoff game, take the points.

Possessions should be at premium in most wild card games, which means unders could be better plays than overs

Last season, 4-of-6 wild card matchups produced 50 points or more. This season, we could see a reversal of that trend. Patriots versus Bills, Chiefs against Steelers, San Francisco at Dallas, Arizona versus the Los Angeles Rams, and Buccaneers against Eagles could all be under games. San Francisco, New England, Pittsburgh, the Rams, and the Eagles will all want to use clock. If they succeed, we could see low-scoring games. Keep that in mind when handicapping 2022 NFL wild card totals.
