2022 Singapore Grand Prix Takeaways

By Jeff Stinger

The returning Singapore Grand Prix had nothing but drama for fans and bettors. Both qualifying and race days featured inclement weather, which added more elements of uncertainty for the constructors and its pair of drivers. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez had his street circuit expertise and secured maximum points by the end of the race. He was followed by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, respectively.

With looming happenings coming from all directions, Nitrobetting shares the best 2022 Singapore Grand Prix storylines below.

Key Takeaways from the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix

Perez dominates Singapore’s Marina Bay Circuit

Sergio Perez is a master of the street circuit. He held off Charles Leclerc for his first-ever win in Singapore. The Red Bull driver proved himself competent on a wet track and maintained his lead throughout the race. Checo was quick on the intermediate tires all the way to the slick tires which we only saw on the track in the latter stages.

It was a solid drive for Perez from start to finish. Leclerc managed to keep a narrow gap but eventually fell behind in the final minutes of the race. Charles’ Ferrari was right on the tail of the Mexican driver but the latter’s defense never flinched. The former Racing Point driver grabs his fourth career win and second with Red Bull.

Despite picking up a five-second penalty at the end of the race for straying too far behind the Safety Car, Perez retained his win thanks to a late push that stretched his gap from Leclerc to over five seconds.

A messy race for Max Verstappen

After an under-fuelled stint in qualifying, the Red Bull driver had to settle for a P8 start. But, the defending champion and Drivers’ standings leader Max Verstappen expressed his disappointment at finishing P7 in Singapore. We witnessed the 2022 F1 odds favorite claw his way back into the points twice. He had a poor start and was never in contention for a podium finish that could have locked in his title race ahead of rival Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen lost five places on the first lap and found himself in P13. After several Safety and Virtual Safety Car periods on the greasy track, Max had to cut through the field to P5 before pitting for slicks as the track dried out. However, at the next Safety Car restart, the Dutchman locked up trying to get ahead of Lando Norris. This forced him to pit again to change his flat-spotted tires.

He did well to bounce back from last place to P7, which brought us multiple skirmishes with former World Champions Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

Ricciardo is back in the points

The Australian only has a handful of races to bump up his stock value. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Ricciardo fight the midfielders of the grid. He started from a disheartening P16 on the grid. But for all that, he makes it to our 2022 Singapore Grand Prix storylines with a strong start in the early stages and capitalized on the Safety Car occurrences throughout the race. His fifth-place finish on Sunday might just be the confidence booster he needs to prove himself to another constructor before departing McLaren at the end of the season. The returning Singapore GP also marks his first top-five finish since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in December 2021. Additionally, teammate Lando Norris secured the fourth position to help McLaren retake fourth place from rivals Alpine in the Constructors’ Championship.
