2023 Australian Grand Prix Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

Formula 1 first featured in the Land Down Under in 1985 when Adelaide hosted the season finale. Since then, the race moved to Melbourne, with Albert Park converted into a facility that accommodates the fastest four-wheeled vehicles in the world. Since the race returned in 2022 following the pandemic, both drivers and fans received the new layout very well.

Charles Leclerc is the latest Australian GP winner, which he secured last year. Meanwhile, defending champion Max Verstappen tops the Drivers’ Championship standings coming into the weekend in search of his first Grand Prix win in Australia. With both Red Bulls looking solid and Aston Martin, Mercedes, and Ferrari playing catch up with the 2022 Constructors’ Champions, Nitrobetting takes a different approach and highlights the top 2023 Australian Grand Prix sleeper picks.

Oscar Piastri

  • 2023 Australian Grand Prix Odds: +75000

The rookie driver suits up for his first home race as a Formula 1 driver. Many expected him to be behind the wheel of an Alpine in his debut race. However, the 21-year-old surprised everyone when he signed with McLaren last year. Piastri also replaced fellow Aussie driver Daniel Ricciardo, who currently serves as Red Bull’s reserve driver for the year.

It’s been a tough few weeks for the 2021 Formula 2 champion. He recorded his first DNF at the Bahrain International Circuit in March after sustaining mechanical problems on his MCL60. This was followed by a P15 finish at Saudi Arabia where he outperformed teammate Lando Norris. The trend remains positive for the Aussie as the crowd roots for him this weekend. We are not 100% sure what he is capable of. Nevertheless, his past achievements tell us that he can get acquainted with the Formula 1 grid quickly. Given that he does not pick up any reliability issues, Piastri is a solid sleeper pick here.

Lando Norris

  • 2023 Australian Grand Prix Odds: +75000

Lando Norris matches his teammate Oscar Piastri on paper at +75,000. He did well in his previous appearance at Albert Park Circuit and finished fifth. It was a vast leap from his first race in Australia where he only managed a P12. While many still question whether or not McLaren can keep up with the frontrunners or at least stay in the midfield, racing team CEO Zak Brown remains confident ahead of the weekend.

Many focus on the dealbreaker that is Norris’ last pair of races, but for all that, we know that the man can drive. Norris finished seventh in the 2022 Driver Standings with 122 points. He did only score six points in his first two races last year and eventually picked up the pace in Australia. If the Belgian-British driver gets out of this slump, there’s reason to believe that he is one of the best sleeper picks of this weekend’s Australian GP.

Nico Hulkenberg

  • >2023 Australian Grand Prix Odds: +150000

The returning driver brings up more question marks in this weekend’s race. He now has a full-time gig with Haas after his two-race stint with Aston Martin last season. The German race car driver bagged P15 and P12, respectively, in his first two races in the Middle East. With a refreshed Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit ahead of him and a decent machine in his hands, there’s a reason behind his appearance as a viable sleeper pick.

Hulkenberg holds the best Australian GP results on this list. In eight appearances Down Under, Nico achieved five top-seven finishes or better. His last two races at the circuit featured a pair of P7s with the Renault F1 Team. This is not to be disregarded. His experience matched with a competent car can make him a serious threat on the grid.
