2023 College Football Upsets Predictions

By Hank Blaine

Like every season in college football, the 2023-2024 NCAAF Season should boast numerous upsets that will have sports bettors’ heads spinning. Below, we list six of the top upsets of the season. Every upset listed below will have a massive impact on which teams win their conference and which attract College Football Playoff bids.

Teams That Can Become Upsets for the 2023 College Football Season

Texas beats Alabama

This Sep 9 game should come down to quarterback play. The Texas Longhorns have the more advanced passing attack because Quinn Ewers is one of the better quarterbacks in the nation. Not only that, but the Horns also boast a strong defense and the rushing attack should be okay even though Bijan Robinson now plays for the Atlanta Falcons.

Alabama is loaded on defense, has a great offensive line, and the head coach is the best of all time. But Bama is missing the Bryce Young, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones signal-caller that led to routine College Football Playoff participation. This season, Sark beats Saban.

Wisconsin takes down Ohio State

Wisconsin versus Ohio State happens on Saturday, October 28. We’re predicting the matchup is a Halloween nightmare for the Buckeyes who happen to be in almost the same boat as the Alabama Crimson Tide.

C.J. Stroud may have been college football’s best quarterback in 2022. Stroud now plays for the Houston Texans. Although Kyle McCord has the makings of a great QB, and he does get to throw to the exceptional Marvin Harrison Jr., the Ohio State defense has issues.

Luke Fickell didn’t take the job at Wisconsin to lose. Fickell attracted Tanner Mordecai to Madison. Tanner played for Oklahoma early in his college career and threw the ball for SMU the last couple of seasons,. Mordecai is an under the radar college QB who has the makings of an NFL starter and is the main reason the Badgers get the win over the Buckeyes.

Duke upsets Clemson in College Football Week 1

For some reason, college analysts can’t get off the Clemson bandwagon. There are better teams in the ACC this season, namely North Carolina and Florida State.

The love for Clemson continues to know zero bounds. Why? You’re guess is as good as ours. In any case, Duke has a star quarterback in Riley Leonard and Clemson doesn’t know what they have at QB. Also, this happens on the Dookies’ field.

Tennessee dethrones Georgia

This is our gutsiest and least likely to happen upset play. But, hey, you have to take a swing once in a while, right?

UGA won back-to-back College Football Playoff National Championships for one reason, Stetson Bennett. You can talk all you want about Georgia’s defense, Kirby Smart’s brilliant coaching, the rushing attack, etc.

But at the end of the day, the Dawgs won because Stetson Bennett rose to the occasion. Bennett no longer plays in Athens. Who will be UGA’s quarterback this season? We don’t know.

On the other side, Tennessee’s Joe Milton III is on the verge of breaking out as the SEC’s top quarterback. Milton III will run Josh Heupel’s offense to perfection, the Tennessee D will rise tall, and the Vols get an unbelievable upset over Georgia in Athens on Nov. 18.

Coastal Carolina sends UCLA reeling

It feels like Grayson McCall has played college football for a decade. But McCall is just a junior. Grayson will be the best player on the field when UCLA takes on Coastal Carolina on Sep 2.

Although the game happens in Pasadena, the Bruins’ defense was a disaster last season. So home field won’t have much of an impact.

The bottom line is that the Chanticleers boast the better overall team. So we should expect Coastal to pull off the upset victory.

Arizona upsets Mississippi State

This Sep 9 game boasts a great offense versus a talented defense. Mike Leach passed away this offseason, so Mississippi State has a massive transition to make.

The Bulldogs will employ a more balanced attack instead of the air raid that made Leach’s system famous. Miss State projects to lean on their talented defense.

The Wildcats will lean on quarterback Jayden de Laura, who gained 25 pounds this offseason, a strong offensive line, and one of the most talented group of wide receivers in the Pac 12. If Zona’s defense has improved at all, the Wildcats outscore the Bulldogs in this early season matchup and pull off the SU upset victory.
