Notre Dame, San Diego State, and the USC Trojans play on opening day
On Saturday, August 26, three of the better teams in the nation hit the gridiron. None of the three teams should lose, but they could struggle to win against the spread.
Notre Dame plays Navy. The Irish versus the Midshipmen is always a tough matchup to handicap. The Golden Domers and Sailors are traditional rivals.
San Diego State hosts MAC power Ohio. The Aztecs believe they can win the Mountain West. Ohio is always one of the MAC’s top teams.
USC hosts San Jose State. The Spartans, that’s SJSU, is a quality squad. The Trojans will get a good idea of where they’re at after their game versus the Spartans.
Florida at Utah on August 31 is the season’s first major matchup
The first major matchup between Power 5 conference teams happens five days on August 31, a Thursday, when Florida travels to Utah to battle the Utes.
If Cameron Rising is healthy, Rising suffered a torn ACL in the Rose Bowl, Utah could play their way into the College Football Playoff this season. The team returns 14 starters.
Florida appears to be going through a rebuild this season. Florida’s fans don’t expect much. If the Gators surprise and are competitive, we can expect plenty of questions to arise regarding the Utes.
Boise State at Washington and North Carolina versus South Carolina on Sep 2 are massive games
Michael Penix Jr. is one of the top returning quarterbacks in the nation. The Huskies’ starting QB must show up agianst a Boise State defense that, once again, will be solid. If Washington dominates Boise State, they may not only become a Pac-12 contender, but could throw their hat into the College Football Playoff discussion.
North Carolina versus South Carolina is massive because both teams have returning starting quarterbacks. NFL analysts are in love with Drake Maye’s skills. Maye, the Tar Heels starting QB, posted ridiculous stats as a freshman.
South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler came on strong at the end of last season. The team that wins this will be a force in their conference.
On Sunday, Sep 3, Florida State versus LSU is one of the most significant games of the season
SEC Championship runner up LSU starts the season on the road versus Florida State. Both teams believe they have what it takes to win the National Championship.
LSU returns arguably the top quarterback in the SEC, Jayden Daniels. The defense will be great and Brian Kelly should excel calling plays in his second season in Baton Rouge.
Many feel Florida State’s Jordan Travis is one of the top quarterbacks in all of college football. FSU, like LSU, is loaded. The team that wins this could jump into the top five, maybe, the top four, which would put them on the path to the College Football Playoff.
Clemson isn’t a lock against Duke on Monday, Sep 4
The Clemson Tigers are a solid team, but Clemson must travel to Durham to take on an experienced Duke squad in their first week contest.
Duke returns 17 starters from last season’s team. Quarterback Riley Leonard is an all-ACC contender. Leonard might be the best returning quarterback in the conference.
Also, Clemson hasn’t dominated in recent seasons. At -12.5, Clemson offers underlay odds because the Blue Devils will push the Tigers for the straight up victory.
