2023 F1 Constructors’ Championship Mid-Season Overview

By Jeff Stinger

Red Bull currently dominates the Drivers’ Standings thanks to F1 phenom Max Verstappen working his magic behind the RB19. Teammate Sergio Perez also holds second place in the table and is 53 points behind the Belgian-Dutch driver. This puts the constructor at a massive advantage in the 2023 Constructor Standings.

But, how does the rest of the list look with rivals Mercedes looking good after the Spanish GP? How will the top-five unfold since Aston Martin stepped up this season? That said, Nitrobetting takes a deep dive into this F1 Constructors’ Championship overview.

Top 2023 F1 Season Stories So Far

Top of the Mountain

Max Verstappen continues to rack up points for his team after another incredible display of driving talent in Spain. The defending champion gets his third grand slam victory from the pole as he led every lap and secured the race’s fastest lap time of the day. It also puts him a race win behind Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna at 40 career wins and fifth in the all-time list.

The Red Bulls are beyond anyone’s league right now. The RB19s have led every lap of the last three consecutive events, and the last team to accomplish the feat was Mercedes three seasons ago–Tuscan, Russian, and Eifel GP. Their points haul last weekend puts them well ahead of the competition. Max scored maximum points while teammate Sergio Perez fought his way up to a P4 finish. The pair remain heavy favorites in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix.

Many expected Tifosi to be their biggest threat of the season. But, the Maranello-based constructor has more issues than anticipated. Results have been inconsistent for the driver duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. We haven’t seen Ferrari secure a P1 finish this season either. The Scuderia currently sits fourth in the standings with 100 points and 34 behind Aston Martin.

The Chasedown

Mercedes could bounce back in the next few weeks coming after their poor start to the 2023 season. There’s a clear path to the second in the Constructors’ Championship since producing positive results in the recent Spanish Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell bagged a double-podium finish, crossing the line in P2 and P3, respectively. The new car development the team put into play influenced positive results.

There’s currently a huge gap between the mighty Red Bulls and the rest of the grid, which Mercedes could potentially close moving forward. Since Red Bull grips the constructors’ championship lead, we expect the fight for second to go down between Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Ferrari.

Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s stellar start to the 2023 campaign was met by a dip in performance. Their numbers at last weekend’s Spanish GP saw a pair of struggling drivers. Many looked forward to local driver and two-time champion Fernando Alonso pushing to the limit. Unfortunately, it did not go as planned for the Silverstone-based team.

Ever since the season opener, the former midfield team shocked the paddock with their pace. They had a good grip on second place in the Constructors’ Championship table. However, the recent events tell us that another challenger applies pressure in the form of eight-time constructors champions Mercedes. The latter just snatched second place from Aston Martin, but are no more than 20 points ahead coming into the next Grand Prix.

Midfield and Below

Alpine is in a pretty safe spot in the midfield race at fifth. The French pairing of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly has been racking up top-ten finishes, with the former scoring the first podium finish for his team in 2023 at Monaco. Behind them is a struggling McLaren outfit with only 17 points. The Surrey-based team started to find its footing at the most recent race weekend but failed to close after a few unlucky incidents. Nevertheless, expectations remain high for rookie driver Oscar Piastri and McLaren staple Lando Norris.

Closing the bottom four of the Constructors’ Championship race are Haas and Alfa Romeo tied with eight points each at seventh and eighth, respectively. We’ve seen some pace come out of Zhou and his season-best finish of P9. Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg looks solid in his comeback despite operating a more inferior car versus the rest of the grid. Lastly, AlphaTauri and Williams close the bottom two.
