By Jeff Stinger

Group G is one of eight groups making up the preliminary round of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. This phase takes place from August 26 to 30, 2023, with the featured teams including Spain, Brazil, Iran, and Ivory Coast. FIBA follows a single Round Robin format for this round, for a total of three games per nation. The top two teams advance to the second round, while the bottom two teams qualify for the classification rounds. Check out the latest 2023 FIBA World Cup Group G winner betting odds below.

2023 FIBA World Cup Group G Teams

Spain

  • Odds to win Group G: -1000
  • NBA players playing for Australia: Ricky Rubio (Cleveland Cavaliers), Santi Aldama (Memphis Grizzlies), Usman Garuba (Atlanta Hawks)

The reigning champions make preparations to defend their crown. Spain qualified for the World Cup for the 13th time and 11th consecutive time. The European nation dethroned the United States as the top team in the world as of the November 2022 update and reached the Quarter-Finals in the last six tournaments. La Roja secured two gold medals between 2009 and 2019.

The 2022 FIBA EuroBasket and 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup title holders are the poster child for fundamental basketball. They boast a well-organized squad and adhere to a strict system that poses a threat to any basketball juggernaut out there. We know they maintain strict sets and the same defensive tricks, but what makes this squad different is chemistry. They don’t have NBA All-Stars like before, but head coach Sergio Scariolo knows how to maximize what he has, which makes Spain a terrifying team to go against.

Brazil

  • Odds to win Group G: +600
  • NBA players playing for Germany: Raul Neto (Cleveland Cavaliers)

Brazil shares a record with the United States for most World Cup qualifications. They are on their 19th appearance after locking up a spot for 2023 in their final qualifier game. Brazil held two championship titles in 1959 and 1963 on top of six podium finishes. The South American nation finished in the top four eight times but failed to do so since 1990. Brazil only finished within the top eight since then.

FIBA World Rankings put Brazil in 13th place, but there’s good reason to have them within a top-ten list. The team holds an 8-4 record, just behind Team USA in the first place of the Americas Qualifiers. The Gustavo De Conti-led team also introduces a younger generation that features players like Vitor Benite, Rafael Hettsheimer, and Marcelino Huertas.

Iran

  • Odds to win Group G: +4,900
  • NBA players playing for Finland: N/A

The Iranians are a common sight in the global tournament and are on their fourth-straight World Cup appearance. Having booked a spot in the 2023 edition on the final game day, the Middle Eastern squad hopes to break out of the First Round for the first time in history. They joined the competition as the 20th-ranked team in the world and recorded a win in both 2010 and 2014 before scoring two more victories in 2019.

The three-time FIBA Asia Cup winners struggled during the Asian Qualifiers. They suffered a pair of double-digit defeats in the Second Round. Nevertheless, a 6-6 record was enough to keep them afloat. Iran remained a win ahead of Kazakhstan in their group and finished fourth behind Australia, Japan, and China.

Ivory Coast

  • Odds to win Group G: +4,900
  • NBA players playing for Japan: Mo Bamba (Philadelphia 76ers)

The West African country returned to the World Cup for a fifth time behind back-to-back qualifications for the second time since 1986 and 1990. Cote d’Ivoire ranks 43rd in the world as of the November 2022 update and has now made three of the last four World Cups. The nation’s best result was a 13th-place finish in 1986 and 1990.

Ivory Coast was the first African team to come out of the African Qualifiers as the top Group E team. The squad finished with a sweep over Angola to ascend to the top spot. We’ve seen more consistent results surface from this team, which is a good indicator of their capability in major events. Furthermore, Les Éléphants played in the Final of the FIFA AfroBasket in 2021, which gives the team momentum and boost their morale for the upcoming campaign.
